ONE
Ksmiled as the wind blew through her hair. She’d been running in her wolf form for so long that she forgot what it felt like to be carried, to not have to exert herself as she travelled. Liz ran faster than K ever could, meaning she’d been holding back when they were running together before.
Another thing she forgot about was how her mind raced when she didn’t have to worry about running. She thought about the people she left behind, her friends and family. Were they worried about her? Would they accept her back if she went home again? She knew the wolves that were watching wouldn’t be able to keep up with her, which meant they would head home to report their findings.
She hadn’t admitted it, but she wasn’t sure she wanted to go back. Without the others trailing her, it was the first opportunity she had to consider not returning to The Den. Despite the sense of responsibility, K wanted her own life. She wanted to decide her own path without having to be concerned about how it affected everyone in The Den.
Before she left home, before she met Shanoai, she’d had a conversation with her father, which turned into an argument. He wanted her to step up and take on more responsibilities. Being the daughter of the Alpha came with more than she bargained for. It wasn’t as if she could ever opt-out. Or at least he didn’t think she could.
She thought of her father, a large man with grey in his eyebrows and a large toothy smile. Knowing him, he’d brush off her leaving as an attempt to burn off steam after yet another disagreement between father and daughter. That was why she was in the woods that day, clearing her head of what he told her, what she refused to accept.
Riding atop Liz, she realized this was the opportunity she needed. While they were chasing their tails, trying to pick up her scent again, she could leave. She could go to the other side of the world and never worry about The Den again.
She frowned and cursed beneath her breath. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t thought about it before. But every time she did, her chest felt like it was set ablaze. Panic and anxiety produced by the thought of turning her back on everything she knew. K wanted her freedom, but she wasn’t sure if she could abandon everything she loved to get it.
She put her thoughts of her family away just as the wall surrounding Mosail came into view. Soon she would give Charlie the message from Shanoai, hand Liz off to whoever was responsible for her dietary imbalance, and take off on her own adventure. Maybe she’d find a beach that wasn’t infested with sirens where she could lounge around and figure out her next steps.
Alright, Liz. Let’s get this over with.
K rubbed Liz’s neck, expecting her to keep forward. Instead, the aerohorse chose her own path, veering left and heading straight for the Lesera forest.
Liz, no!
K screamed, and then the sneezing fit started. As the horse ran through the trees covered with rose-colored leaves, their pollen flooded K’s senses and made her head spin. What did I do to you? Why do you hate me?
She cried as her eyes turned red and
