As a fan of classic style Western novels and dogs, I immediately loved NORDIC & FINN. It’s the first novel in a new series by Peter Brandvold, a bestselling, award-winning author of Western novels who’s a regular writer for the popular Wolfpack Publishing imprint. I’ve enjoyed a number of Brandvold’s other books. But I especially enjoyed NORDIC & FINN. The central character is Anders Nordic, a loner who works for a female rancher. Nordic likes animals, but few people. He’s skilled with a gun and uses it without hesitation if threatened. When he sees a homeless collie dog being cruelly abused by some kids during a trip into town, he scares them away and, when confronted by a bigshot banker who’s the father of one of the kids, he punches the banker in the nose. Then he leaves town with the dog, who he names Finn. This leads to a bloody chain of events in which Nordic and Finn are forced to fight local lawmen and then a series of hired guns. They threaten not only him and Finn, but also the woman he works for and her beautiful young niece, Clara. During the course of the story, there’s lots of old-fashioned action and gunplay and a sweet romance between Nordic and Clara. But the real heart of the story is the bond between Nordic and Finn, who turns out to be a fearsome fighter himself. If you follow Brandvold on Facebook, as I do, you can’t help but notice how that bond seems to mirror Brandvold’s close relationship with his dog, Bud. As a fellow dog lover, that and Brandvold’s story about the relationship between Nordic and Finn, have made me an even bigger fan of his work. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next novel in this series.
