    They were hanging John Boudreaux.

    Two minutes before? I sat looking at a bright-eyed, fresh-faced hologram in the middle of the floor. As I watched this cute little blonde demonstrating 'Motel Pilates,' I thought to myself: that's the perfect metaphor for America now.

    Random chance brought us together. When I sat on that ruined motor court bed, it made the outlet short out. The jolt turned on a cheap Malaysian holoprojector showing a cute blonde girl in yoga pants. She demonstrated 'Motel Pilates', and I couldn't help laughing. There's some bleak humor in watching her silly dance moves across million-year-old green shag carpet.

    Light flickered across a cracked bathroom mirror, musty blankets on a stained mattress. All my worldly possessions sitting in a rough canvas bag on a scratched Formica counter. No pills, no money, not even my phone. Seventy years on this planet, all I had to show for it was a laptop, a change of clothes, and my shaving kit.

    Ten more! Here, in all this misery, a cute little blonde doing poses like nothing was wrong anywhere. The camera zoomed in on her tight little butt. What else would
