    Banished!

    Kerridee shoved items into her bag, including the food her mother would definitely have prevented her from taking. The village chief stood in the doorway, watching her every move. She glanced his way . Luckily, he did not know which items were her belongings and which belonged to the family. He looked relieved when Kerridee hoisted the bag on her shoulder and walked towards him.

    The chief turned and led the way out into the sunshine. The entire village had gathered to see her leave. Her best friend Missori took a step towards her, but the girl's father pulled her back, pushing her behind him. Kerridee's mother and brother looked at her, but turned their heads away as she looked their way.

    Fine, she thought. If that's the way they want it, I'll show them I don't care.

    She stood tall with shoulders back and marched towards the entrance gate to the village. The chief had to hurry to keep up with her, but she didn't stop at the gate. Kerridee passed through the opening and marched towards the distant trees. The first trees were some distance from the settlement as the men harvested wood needed for firewood, building homes and furniture. By the time the sun set, Kerridee had arrived at the beginning of a dark forest. She didn't look back, or stop when she passed under the first of the trees.

    When she could no longer see anything but trees, Kerridee decided she'd gone far enough and dropped to the ground with her back against a tree trunk. Her mind focused on her banishment. The elders considered her a bad influence for daring to push the boundaries set for women in the male orientated community. Her mother and brother had not supported her, so she now had to fend for herself. The surplus of
