Mortgage of Convenience Kindle Edition
Welcome home.
Ever sent a drunk text to your ex and regretted it in the morning? Well, imagine pitching the debut novel you’ve been hiding to your agent, then waking up with a hangover and a deadline. Oh, and you have a debilitating fear of rejection.
Welcome to Bee Montgomery’s life.
The shy ghostwriter has always shied away from the limelight but may never get this opportunity again. So after five years away, Bee returns home with little more than a suitcase of secrets and a dream. What she really needs is someone confident to guide her.
Enter Sebastian Wolfe, her brother’s best friend. The older man spent his twenties avoiding commitment and his whole life trying to be the man his father never was, but the sexy ex-stripper secretly dreams of a white picket fence and a home of his own. He isn’t expecting to come up short on the deposit, or for the woman he shouldn’t want to offer the rest in exchange for his help to get over her stage fright. But if Bee can’t see how incredible she is, he’s more than happy to show her.
It’s not long before they’re stripping away more than her inhibitions, but as Bee’s deadline looms, she needs to decide if she’s going to keep playing house or return to her real life.

About the author

Dani McLean is an Australian author who writes shamelessly fun contemporary romance with an open-bedroom-door policy. She loves coffee, karaoke, and stories that make you kick your feet up in the air. If lost, she can be found on Ao3, or echo located through her kookaburra laugh.

Mortgage of Conbeenience, er, I mean Convenience, is a stand-alone, full-length novel from Dani McLean. If you've read anything by them before, you'll know they write low angst, fun, sweet and steamy books, so you're in for an un-bee-lieveably good time.
Bee returns home after bee-ing away for 5 years for safe harbor. She's a ghostwriter who has pitched her own novel and is scared about it because when she tries to put herself out there, she freezes up. She doesn’t want to be alone if she fails. She's figuring out where she fits in the world. She has to bee-lieve in herself because she really doesn't have a plan bee.
Sebastian is trying to get the stability he didn't have growing up, so he bee-lieves purchasing a house is the first step. I love Sebastian! He is a sexy, swoony plant dad who has the need to take care of others. Why is it when an MMC makes furniture for the FMC it does it for me? He's also extremely supportive and encouraging. He's just the bees' knees!
They've been pining for each other for a long time, so the forced proximity just increases that want. Their com-buzz-tible chemistry led to some un-bee-lievably steamy scenes (check content warnings). Hello, strip club shenanigans! It's also a very sweet romance. You can tell they were meant to bee.
The majority of the book's conflict was with the MCs individually dealing with things outside of their relationship, so you're not going to get a third act breakup.
There was a sub-plot, involving a friendship that is dissolving and isn’t healthy for Bee, and it hit close to home. It’s not something you expect, as an adult, with long time friendships and it was just cathartic to see on page as something specifically relatable. Dani put in a lot of emotion into this one for sure.
Overall, I really enjoyed it. Bee-lieve me when I say if you want something sweet as honey and spicy, I think you’ll find it’s worth the buzz. 😉

Let me just start with that I really connected with the FMC, which made the story feel surprisingly relatable. 😍 She’s finding herself as an adult, learning by trial and error, which felt very true to life. The romance was sweet, and the MMC was loving and supportive 🥰 There were some wonderful, thought-provoking moments, but a few parts felt unnecessary and slowed down the pacing.
My main frustration with this book was with the inconsistent “open door” policy. The book has a open door policy, BUT more often than not it would build up to spicy scenes, but then suddenly close the door, making the scenes feel incomplete 🥵 I don’t need everything on the page, but if there’s so much buildup, it’s disappointing when the moment abruptly cuts away.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and found it to be an easy read with some memorable parts, but these issues kept me from rating it higher 🤍

I have read all of Dani McLean's work thus far, and unfortunately, "Mortgage of Convenience" is my least favorite of her books. I found the chemistry between Sebastian and Bee to be severely lacking. While the scenes featuring spice are (shockingly frequent, sometimes out of nowhere) well-written, I simply felt no spark between them, so they fell flat for me. I think a lot of my problems stem from them being pretty boring, sometimes contradictory characters. Bee seemed to be hugely outgoing when she moved away from her hometown, but when she got back, she turned into a shell of a person. Usually, McLean's lead characters have terrific chemistry with one another, but I just didn't feel it between Bee and Sebastian. I did not doubt that they both really liked each other, but it never felt end-game permanent, especially for Bee (even at the end of the book). Some of the romance elements felt rushed between them, while others felt like they took an extraordinarily long time (and not in a slow-burn type of way). I have seen many readers complain about the believability of the premise of this story, to which I say, what!? People will believe in shapeshifters and alien romances, but god forbid a person helps their brother's best friend buy a house to help them attain their dreams. In this economy, they need all the help they can get. I don't think this needed to be a full-length novel. I think this material would have been better served in a novella because a lot of the prose and plot details are repeated over and over ad nauseum. I also thought it was a little silly that Bee made such a big deal about her book in the beginning. I totally understand the apprehension of letting anyone see your work in progress. I have been in this position before, and it can be terrifying, but it felt like the bargaining was off between Sebastian and Bee...she helped him buy a house, and he... is going to read her book and give her advice? Like I said, silly. I'm sorry to say, this book is shockingly "mid," as the youths say. I will still read all of Dani's future works, though, because I know what she's capable of.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2024Mortgage of Convenience is Dani's best book yet!
I really enjoyed Bee and Seb and their dynamic...and their pining. This book contains some of my favorite tropes, including forced proximity. I related to much more of this book than I was expecting to. Friendship breakups are very, very hard whether you're being broken up with or you're the one cutting ties. Dani handled this aspect of her book so well...it tugged at my heartstrings quite a bit.
I don't know if this book is supposed to be part of a series or not...but I can see one or two couples brewing in the book, and I'd love to see their stories for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously Unique & Empowering
I thought this book was fabulous. Not only was it a pleasure to read, I loved the way that it explored the subjects of self-worth and self-discovery.
From the get go, readers get to see the way that Sebastian has worked through so much to find peace as a bisexual man. He still has issues, but we get to see and feel the confidence he has gained.
Bee is in a different place. She has taken some initial steps to move into her own power and pursue her dreams, but readers get to live her transformation with her.
I thought this book was inspiring. It was an interesting story unto itself, but it also got me thinking about who I am and who I want to be. It’s a pretty cool thing to finish a book feeling inspired to keep showing up as your authentic self and pursuing your own dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars bother’s best friend and magic Mike vibes
Read this book if you like:
Brother’s Best friend
Forced Proximity
Slowish Burn
Her biggest cheerleader
Healing of emotional scars
Personal growth
Some books are more than romance, you just get engaged with the characters that you don’t care about anything else. What I loved was how they both helped each other. Also I am in love with Aiden okay? He is the fuzziest big bro!!
The things they talked about, him helping her in general and even with specific things was so amazing to read.
Also the whole Magic Mike moment? HOTTTTTT!!
I want to experience something I ke that just once or maybe always.
This is my first book by Dani and I promise it’s not going to be the last one. The storytelling and individual character growth is chefs 💋

5.0 out of 5 stars A tender forced proximity + brother's best friend romance
A very tender romance about stepping fully into who you are. Bee was an (uncomfortably) relatable character, and Sebastian was the sweetest hero. The forced proximity trope worked so well in this one!
