      Chapter One

      A bead of sweat rolled down her neck and into her cleavage as she pulled her uniform top away from her chest and fanned herself with a menu. Marie Griffin wished she had let the phone call go to the answering machine that morning instead of picking up and agreeing to work the lunch shift at the Hoosier Diner. Once again, she was stuck working during the hottest time of the day and the air conditioning had quit an hour before. Eyeing the bin of ice, she wanted to scoop handfuls out and shove it inside her clothes, maybe that would cool her off. Instead, she leaned against the counter and continued to wave the menu in an attempt to cool herself. Her normally comfortable uniform stuck to her, highlighting her full figure. At least her dark auburn hair was already up in a bun and not sticking to her neck.

      She turned at the jingle of the bell over the door, smiling at the stranger dressed in an Indianapolis Police Department uniform. He stared at her as she lazily fanned herself with the menu. Hi there. You can sit wherever. I’ll get you some water. As she moved to scoop some ice into a glass, she missed him checking her out, zeroing in on her butt.

      Turning around, she found him seated at the counter, studying her. His dark hair flopped over his forehead, framing his hazel eyes. She watched as a blush crept up his face. Another jingle and she heard a familiar voice. Hey, Marie. I thought you had today off.

      I made the mistake of answering the phone this morning. Brenda’s sick, so I agreed to come in and work. It was okay until the air conditioning quit an hour ago. Kevin is in the back trying to get it going again as the repairman can’t get here until tomorrow. She set a glass of water in front of the stranger and scooped ice for another. At least, it’s not busy. I think the heat is keeping everyone home today. I can’t believe it’s this hot in October.

      Be glad you’re in here; the heat is making people nuts. What time is your shift over? I don’t want you walking home alone today.

      I’m off at two but I’ve got class at three, so I’m heading straight to campus. She placed a glass of ice water in front of him. In an attempt to change her brother’s focus, she asked about his partner. So, who’s the rookie?

      This is James Marsden. He’s just out of the academy. James, this is my little sister, Marie.

      Good to meet you, James. Don’t let Steve boss you around too much.

      The red fading from his face, James replied, I won’t. He reverted his attention to the menu.

      Marie looked at her brother. You want the usual, Steve?

      Sounds good.

      She scribbled on her pad and glanced at James. And, how about you, handsome? She smiled as the blush overtook his face again.

      I’ll, um, I’ll have the club sandwich.

      And to drink? She admired his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed.

      Water’s fine, he croaked.

      Okay. I better go let Kevin know we have customers. I’ll have your food out in a few minutes.

      James stared at Marie as she pushed on the swinging door, glancing guiltily upwards when he heard Steve clear his throat.

      I know that look. Keep your hands off my sister, rookie.

      His mind whirled. Oh
