About the Author
The Sea Lord
Torches lit the way along a worn trade road leading into Widow’s Cape, the home of Manor Lord Robert Moray. It was a large trading port and fishing harbor on the northern coast of the Kingdom of Lotcala. Lord Robert Moray had called upon his banners to join him for an important discussion regarding their future. His bannermen, Lords Redwater, Boilingmead, and Olfson, had come along with the families that swore oaths to them at their lord’s urgent request. It was a tradition that was held in the highest regard, especially by the families that held to their Gota roots.
The lords all entered the market square of the town as the evening crept into the night. All were tired, weary from the road, but ready to voice their thoughts. Everyone knew why the gathering had been called and few were thrilled about it.
My lords,
Robert began, stepping up on a stone bench in the center of the market square. I’ve called you all here, as is our place. You have all heard of the invasion to the south. Gota warriors from Gotistan have sailed to our shores and have stormed Gib. The king has called all his banners, the barons, and their men, to ride south and fight back the invaders!
A loud grumbling came out from the crowd. Robert stayed silent as he tried to hear some of the opinions.
Sir Bjorn Redwater stepped up close to Lord Robert. We’ve got our own lands and waters to contend with! Why should we defend the land of the king’s woman that killed our former liege lord?
Bjorn was a stout, large man in his mid-fifties. His gray hair was long and braided, tied behind his ears. He wore a long leather coat, trimmed in fur, and embroidered with his sigil of a black longship with a red sail under a cutlass blade. Other lords and knights agreed with the elder man. They remembered the previous war several years before where their former baron, Baron Harbor, who was killed by the king’s general Miralda. After the war, General Miralda was made the Archduchess of Gib. Many in Harbor’s former lands, the Barony of Ter Nog, saw this as an insult to their former lord.
We fought to claim Gib, and the king handed it to that woman!
another lord, Sir Sven Olfson, said. Even after we had to watch our liege lord die to his woman, we still fought as loyal men and women to the king, but our rewards were meager pickings while the murderess was gifted lands rivaling our former lord. Creator rest him!
Olfson pulled the collar of his thick coat up to block the cool breeze. His thick oilskin coat, marked with the sigil of a large mammoth of his house, was suited for the colder northern seas.
Robert nodded, and others yelled out in agreement. Robert, as a manor lord, was directly under Baron Harbor, along with two other manor lords. They had rallied the banners to follow Baron Harbor as he rebelled against the king’s decision to use a commoner army, led by a gentry daughter, to fortify his capital.
The fact that the Harbor family had been stripped of their lands and titles,
