      ALANNA LUCAS

      One: Be Careful Who You Trust

      Dear fellow Wallflowers,

      Having endured ill-treatment from relatives—who now want to marry me off to the first man who agrees to marriage—and would-be friends most of my life, this wallflower decided to take her future into her own hands. There is no better way to achieve this goal than to rise to the occasion and prove naysayers wrong while having a little fun. And, by fun, I mean revenge. Occasionally, revenge is the only way to prove you are better than the gossip. To achieve this goal, one must be willing to take chances while still protecting your identity. It would simply never do to ruin yourself, dashing all your hopes and dreams. This is Society, after all, and some rules should not be broken.

      This will not be a simple task, for being in Town is like being at a constant masquerade. Everyone conceals who they are, their likes and dislikes, and their true intentions, all in the name of social advancement. Those same individuals, who claim to be friends, parade and put on airs are often the ones you need to watch for the most. Sometimes the only way to be yourself is to conceal your identity, your true wants and desires, until the time is right. And a masquerade is the perfect opportunity to test this theory. Some words of caution though, make certain your mask does not slip, and be vigilant, for rakes and fortune hunters lurk around every corner. And most importantly, beware the rake who masquerades as a friend, an ally. He is most dangerous to your heart.

      How does a wallflower contend with the handsome rake who stirs desire and passion? Beat him at his own game. Seduce him, tempt him, make him believe your masked identity is your true identity. But this begs the question, what happens when a lady attends a masquerade and can be who she’s truly meant to be?

      I can tell you from experience that after enduring a courtship gone awry, it is quite liberating to hold all the cards in this game of revenge, love, and chance. A concealed identity allows the wallflower to experiment with otherwise forbidden topics such as seduction, desire, and temptation. All of which a lady is not supposed to talk about, let alone know about.

      Be careful who you trust, for there are always gossipmongers loitering about, waiting to uncover the next scandal, which can complicate matters, to say the least. And take heed of how much you reveal of yourself when you think no one is looking. It may indeed have the opposite effect. Instead of rising to the occasion, you may find yourself completely besotted. And never, ever—I repeat, never state, I detest all men. For the rake who offered his services to assist you in achieving your goal may turn the tables, just to tempt you.

      Let me leave you with this last piece of advice. Beware your heart, for sometimes love sneaks up on you and ruins the best laid plans.

      Reason Two

      ALINA K FIELD

      Two: Be Careful What You Wish For

      Be careful what you wish for my darling girl.

      P ut away that letter and find a costume.

      Nancy Lovelace stuck out her tongue and then grimaced, swiping at cobwebs descending from the rafters, careful of the fragile paper she’d unearthed.

      Dusty trunks, crates, and cloth-covered furniture cluttered the attics of her family’s ancestral home, Loughton Manor. She’d chased the boys up here often enough when they were children, in the days when life was more carefree.

      Odd that she’d never explored the contents of the trunks.

      "Ooh. Her sister, Cassandra, now Lady Saulsfield moved her lantern closer and rummaged. Here’s a treasure trove."

      Cassandra was two years older and had always been bossy. Now that she was a Viscountess, she was more overbearing than ever.

      I don’t want to attend. Nancy pulled her lantern closer and studied the spidery feminine writing. Perhaps I’ll have a megrim tomorrow night.

      I’ll never forgive you. This masquerade was my idea, you know, and if my own sister won’t support me…

      Fine, she said with a shooing motion, and read on.

      Have your revenge, if you will, little Wallflower. Give his lordship his comeuppance if you must at the masquerade. I’ve read the bard too and I see what’s afoot—mistaken identity, potions, malicious little fairies, and at the end… Child, I was young once and I know that a gel who sets a trap will fall into it herself, mark my word.

      Cassandra squealed and held up a gauzy golden gown, cut in the old style. This will be mine. I’m to be Titania. But shh, don’t tell anyone.

      And let me guess, Saulsfield will be Oberon.

      Cass tittered gleefully. I will not say.

      Nancy glanced at the note again. Deciphering the name inscribed would require better light, but the date listed was a century before.

      Who might have sent it? And to whom? Lovelace ladies were the epitome of staid and proper. Well, perhaps Cassandra had been a bit wild before she met Saulfield.

      What is that?

      Nancy hastily slipped the paper into the book where she’d found it. A journal I believe. Whose, I don’t know. I can’t make out this execrable scrawl.

      One of our male ancestors then. Cassandra held up another dress, this one a dingy white sprinkled with pink flowers and with an abundance of cloth for old fashioned side hoops. What do you think?

      It was hideous. For me? Who am I to play?

      I told you already. You are to be Hermia. You must look the virginal young beauty who Lysander and Demetrius both adore.

      She’d rather play Puck. Nancy rubbed her forehead.

      Eek, silly. You’ve got dirt all over yourself. Cass poked at her with a handkerchief. Look, I know you were crushed in London last spring. She bestowed a tender smile. ‘But I don’t think he really meant to hurt you. The course of true love never did run smooth.’

      Her hand itched to deliver a smack.
