Geoff wheezed as he reached the third floor of the training center. The elevator would have been faster, but he wanted extra time to prepare for his confrontation with Anderton. No, that was a lie. The truth was that he wanted to stall. So he had hauled his overweight, under-exercised body up the three flights of stairs.
And now he needed to catch his breath. That would take a good two minutes. He put out a hand, leaned against the wall, and waited for his heart to slow down.
Anderton stepped out the classroom door into the hallway. Ah, Mister Palmenter! I thought I heard a noise out here. I am delighted that you arrived early. You can help me set up.
He spun back into the classroom. Anderton’s whistling echoed down the hall, some old tune by Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow.
This wasn’t going to be easy, Geoff knew. Anderton was a Certified Master Negotiator, a fact that he mentioned at least twice in every class.
