The book begins with Jaya arriving at the Tandoori Palace to play her gig with Sanjay. She is met there by one of her current history students and one former student who have made an interesting discovery at the University library. She is also met by Miles, who has received an interesting letter from novelist Rick Coronado who needs Jaya's advice on the novel he is writing after seven years of not writing anything. Jaya also discovers that Lane has purchased her dream house in Berkeley and wants her to move in with him. Unfortunately, she also discovers that he still has secrets from her and that makes her hesitant about taking the next step in their relationship.
As the story progresses, we get a fascinating adventure through France and Cambodia, and we also see how the choices Jaya makes begin to affect her daily life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read future books in this series.
This book in particular felt NOT QUITE as adventurous as some previous selections in the serious - much more like a locked-room mystery with a little travel thrown in for folks who come here for that. That being said, if you like the Jaya Jones series, you’ll like this book!
Jaya Jones is supposed to be a history prof, but she love's chasing down mysteries and historic treasure just as much, if not more, than her day job. When 2 students involve her in a search for a Naga King statue that was looted from Becca's home (one of the students) and her father had died during the robbery, Jaya is intrigued. Add to the mystery the fact that Jaya's favorite author is writing a book about the disappearance and death and asked for her assistance, she finds herself chasing down a snake statue.
Usually I have a sneaky suspicion who-done-it, but this one really had lots of red herrings and really stumped me.
Love the character development, but feeling bad for Sanjay. He needs a girlfriend!
Now I can't wait for the next book, whether it's this series or The Accidental Alchemist series.
I find the people are very real and the locations are so well presented that the reader might be tempted to check that their passport is up to date.
A terrific combination of history and fiction.
