“…both sizzles and gives you chills.” - Book Chick Blog 5*
You didn’t stop him. He killed her.
Dire warnings from a voice only he can hear makes Sheriff Cooper Delaney doubt his sanity. When a body is found matching one from a recent nightmare, he believes he’s gone off the deep end. The dead do not talk to the living. Or do they? One body becomes two. Are there more?
Heartbroken by betrayal, Dr. Samantha Fowler finds herself starting over at thirty-three. When she meets the local sheriff, the attraction is instant and fierce, threatening to crumble the defensive walls around her heart. Once burned, twice shy, she vows to stay far away from him for the duration of her stay at the quaint B & B they share. But when she finds one body, then another, avoiding the handsome Texan is impossible.
He’s not done.
Quarry in sight, he watches and waits. “I am the master. I cannot be stopped.”
The clock is ticking…

Review
Whispers on the Wind by Dana Wayne is a romantic suspense novel that takes place in a small town, where not much happens...until bodies start turning up. Sheriff Cooper Delaney lives a relatively low-key life, despite his landlady trying to hook him up with every single girl that passes through her boarding house. It isn't until Doctor Samantha Fowler shows up that the sparks begin to fly. However, Sam has a habit of uncovering bodies, but it's not what it seems. Both are driven by this unheard force, telling them to find him before it's too late. Will Delaney and Fowler uncover the mystery or will one of them fall victim to a deadly killer?
The smooth pace and lovable characters drew me almost instantly into this novel. I really enjoyed the added element of the supernatural. It wasn't in your face, and was done in a very subtle and believable way, almost like Cooper and Sam were running on the instinct of things they already knew. The supporting characters, like Miss Eva and Jason, just added to the completeness of the story. I was left guessing until the end as to who the murderer was. I had some suspicions, but I was surprised when the revelation came at the end of the novel. An added treat was the recipes (I'm an avid baker), so I look forward to trying them out! Whispers on the Wind by Dana Wayne was truly a joy to read and I will certainly look for more books by this author in the future! Reviewed by Lynn-Alexandria McKendrick for InD'Tale Magazine 4.5 Stars with Crowned Heart for Excellence...Whispers On The Wind is an excellent mix for a chilling read. Readers might find it a good idea to read this book in the daylight--or by candlelight if feeling brave. There are so many tense moments where the book may be pulled closer to the nose. The pace is fast and the descriptions pull the reader in as they year for more. A murder mystery and ghostly voices are only some of what Dana Wayne has given her readers. Cooper and Samantha's relationship is filled with passion and searing heat. A definite must read!

About the author

Multi-awarding winning author Dana Wayne is a sixth-generation Texan and still resides in the Piney Woods. She routinely speaks at book clubs, writers’ groups and other organizations and is a frequent guest on numerous writing blogs. A die-hard romantic, her stories are filled with strong women, second chances, and happily ever after.
“I’m all about the romance, so my tales are heartwarming, have a splash of suspense and humor. While they are a little steamy, I believe romance is more about emotion than sex, and the journey is more important than the destination.
“I retired in late 2013 and published my first book in 2016. I was over the moon when it was awarded first place in a contest through the Texas Association of Authors, and I never looked back. My books have been nominated for and/or received various awards and numerous five-star reviews. To have my work validated in such a manner is very gratifying and humbling.”

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2021Whispers On the Wind was quite different than what I was expecting. I’ve got to say this: when 2 positive spirits are in the room with an evil soul-well let’s just say that this evil soul never had a chance! And he didn’t like it when a woman pointed their finger at him???? Sheesh!
I love small town settings in books and can relate to the nuances since I grew up in a small town in East Texas.
I love mysteries and try to figure out the killer before the book ends. Dana Wayne- you had me guessing the wrong person until the killer was revealed. There was also another interesting twist that presents itself in the middle of the story that made me smile.
But those spirits...they became very helpful when mortal humans were perplexed!
Cooper thought he was losing his mind. Thank goodness he finally LISTENED!
I love the smell of gardenias. (Gertrude doesn’t bother with a lovely fragrance when she visits me. I just get a tap on the back).
Read this wonderful story about a family that supports one another through everything life throws at them. And they just keep adding more members.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2019It’s hard for me to find a book that holds my interest. Dana did an amazing job on keeping me glued to the book until the bitter end. I look forward to reading more of her books
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2018To use a favorite phrase of Sam Fowler, one of the main characters of Whispers on the Wind,
“Holy mother of pearl.”
“Holy mother of pearl,” is there a lot going on -- and a lot to love -- in Whispers on the Wind. There is small town Texas charm, but wow does this town struggle with what’s usually a big city problem: brutal murders, likely the work of a serial killer. If solving a murder mystery isn’t enough for you, then perhaps adding in the angle that law enforcement is being assisted by ghosts might pique your interest? Or maybe you need a slow-burn to sizzling-hot romance? A fresh-start-after-a-broken-heart story? A loyal, loving dog with more personality than most people? Whatever it is you’re looking for in a novel, Whispers on the Wind has got you covered.
“Tomorrow wasn’t promised to anyone. There was only today. This moment in time.”
At the core of Whispers on the Wind is the Pecan Grove B&B in Bakersville, Texas, and its owner, Eva. Though Eva isn’t a main character, she and her B&B are integral to what makes the story successful. It is through them that some of the most powerful themes come into play. I particularly enjoyed the explorations of the struggles of the human condition. Author Dana Wayne writes her passages so that readers feel the hurt of betrayal, experience the pain of loneliness, and seethe over blatant sexism. But the book is in no way a downer; Wayne counters the negatives with positives so that readers also feel the joy of finding love and family and purpose and place – the result is a balanced and highly entertaining painting of life at its worst and best and every point in between.
I figured out the killer very early on, but there was still the matter of motive, so I kept turning the pages. The romance is steamier than I like to read, so I turned those pages faster to move along, but the scenes are tastefully done and seem authentic for the tension that builds-up to them. There are a few plot puzzlers that didn’t fit for me -- primarily the inordinate number of strikingly handsome men (please send directions!) and the number of lecherous men in one small town (never mind on those directions) but also some ghost behavior. Additionally, the book would benefit from another pass by the proofreader to clean-up typos and errors. Admittedly, some readers may not notice or care about any of this because the story line and sub-plot are so excellent.
By the time readers turn the last page, they will feel as if they too were guests at Eva’s B&B and have new friends for life. Dana Wayne develops the setting and the characters so well that readers feel placed in the story and are learning about all the events by sitting around the kitchen table, sipping coffee. (SIDE NOTE: Another reason I love this story is that coffee is pretty much a character.) From the fabulous book cover to the fabulously written characters, Whispers on the Wind is a must-read escape that fills all the checkboxes for a satisfying story.
I met the author and got a signed copy of this book when I attended the AME Book Fest in Las Colinas, Texas earlier this year. There were absolutely no strings attached, and my review is my honest opinion – the only kind I give. This full review and other special features on Hall Ways Blog kristinehallways.blogspot.com
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2018Masterpiece! This author is amazing. Dana’s ability to paint pictures with words is incredible. I can imagine Sam and Ccop with vivid detail. I hung on every word to the end. I can’t wait for Dana’s next book!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2018Dana Wayne’s Whispers On The Wind will leave you satisfied, but ready for more. If you’ve ever lived in, passed through or wondered about life in a small Texas town, this is the book for you. This story captures some of the unique dynamics of small town life in Texas. It’s no wonder how I’m drawn to Texas stories written by Texans!
In this single story, Dana Wayne managed to combine some very original elements. We have two spirits/ghosts that only the two protagonists can hear, a Bed-and-Breakfast with its own set of familial relationships, a number of recent murders, and a suspect pool that seems pretty large for such a small town.
In addition to the storyline, which I happen to think is pretty original, Wayne also intertwines a fair amount of humor throughout. In a story like this, humor helps to make an interesting read a fun read!
**The Protagonists of Whispers on the Wind**
Our two protagonists, Doctor Samantha “Sam” Fowler and Sheriff Cooper “Coop” Delaney, seem to have only two things in common: neither wants another relationship, and they both stay in the same B&B. Otherwise, they’re complete opposites.
I know what you’re thinking. Opposites attract – right? That may be true, but they also clash! There’s plenty of clashing and bashing afoot as Coop races to solve the recent murders and keep Sam from becoming a victim.
The evolving relationship between Coop and Sam makes for a lighthearted and humorous subplot, which balances nicely with the grisly business of murder investigation. Coop is the most eligible bachelor in this small town, and Sam is the new fox. It was quite fun to watch Sam try and fight off the local romeos, while Coop tries to put the kibosh on the local rumor mill.
Coop and Sam each hear a voice – a whisper on the wind – but not the same voice. However, each voice makes the hair on the back of their necks stand at attention. I thought their ability to hear the voices added an extra layer of color to their relationship. It also heightened my enjoyment of the story.
I also want to give a shout out to Jack, Sam’s canine companion. He is utterly protective of Sam, and he takes this job very seriously. However, much to Sam’s chagrin, Jack quickly decides that Coop is one of the rare good guys.
**Technically Speaking**
There were a few SPAG errors in the book, but not so many that I need to take issue with them. They certainly did not take anything away from the story.
The pacing was pretty good. As you can imagine, the character arcs in a story like this are huge. However, I thought the arcs applied to several lesser characters were pretty imaginative. That’s a good thing.
The author switches to the killer’s POV several times throughout the story, but the identify of the killer remains unknown until the ramp to the climax. Dana Wayne drops another little bombshell just before we get into the climax. I won’t tell you what it is, but it made my heart go, “Awe…”
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. If you’re a guy reading this review, and you think this may be one of those “chick-flick” books, remember this: really good men read really good stories! This is one of them!
I highly recommend Whispers On The Wind to anyone in need of a good story!
