CHAPTER 1
"You what?" Weaving through the stacks of boxes in her parents’ living room, Kellie Doyle tried and failed to rein in her confusion, disappointment, and, as usual, her temper. Not even the view of fluffy snowflakes promising a white Christmas in northeast Ohio could counter this setback.
Her stomach knotted. This was her childhood home, the house her great-grandparents had built.
The house where I was supposed to have a family.
Frustration swept over her in an instant, a reminder of how that to-do item had worked out so far. Being unwillingly attracted to a player wasn’t helping the matter.
Her mom calmly folded a framed photo from the mantel in bubble wrap and placed it in the box on the wide stone hearth. We’re going to sell the house instead of renting it out. After doing some research, we decided we don’t want the hassle of being a landlord and all the responsibilities and issues that go with it.
And you didn’t even think to talk to me about it?
With uncharacteristic callousness, the woman who’d given birth to her and raised her to be self-reliant and independent shrugged as she cast a quick glance in Kellie’s direction. We just met with the realtor yesterday, and you’ve been out of town most of the week. How was your trip? Boston, wasn’t it? Did you have time to sightsee? It’s not like you need the space. This house needs a family. A couple. With children. A dog and a cat. Some goats or alpacas or something. Besides, how would you take care of twenty acres by yourself?
Oh goody, another conversation about being thirty-eight and single. Do you hear the ticking clock and squeaky door closing, ovaries?
Kellie cursed the tightness in her throat and sank onto the stepladder her mother had probably used to reach the books at the top of the built-in shelves by the fireplace. That’s not the point. What if I want it anyway?
You’re as stubborn now as you were when you were two and had to do everything on your own.
Setting aside the piece of tissue paper in her hand, her mom finally looked her in the eye. Your father and I will make a deal with you. If you show us you’re serious about settling down in the next ten days, we’ll sell you the house. If not, it goes on the market the day after New Year’s like we planned. When was the last time you went on a date?
That’s blackmail! You know I have to travel for work or kiss everything I’ve worked for goodbye.
Was steam coming out of her ears? The thought of losing her seniority to a certain skirt-chasing flirt named Anderson Frost made her sick to her stomach. Summoning his image whenever she used her favorite vibrator was horrifying enough. "Do you have any idea how many men with jobs that require travel haven’t asked me for a second date because my job requires it? I didn’t scrape and claw my way to where I am so I could give it up for mediocre-ever-after and a job I hate."
You didn’t answer my question, Kellie Kristina.
Seriously? You’re doing the middle-name thing?
If her mom wanted the truth, Kellie would tell her the truth. Lunch with Frost and a few co-workers three times recently didn’t count as dates. Two years, eleven months, and…
What day is it? December twenty-first, right? "Twenty-eight days. Or we can round it up to three years if you prefer. That’s how long since I went out with someone I thought might accept the fact that I have a successful career, not just a job."
Silence reigned long enough for her to finally swallow past the lump and blink away the unwanted tears trying to spill past her lashes. Damn it, why did she have to cry when she was angry? Better yet, why did she have to remember random details like the exact day of her last second date? Maybe because it had turned into a disaster of a Christmas Eve because she’d accidentally called her date Anderson when he’d leaned in to kiss her?
Have you signed up for one of those dating apps?
Her mother’s voice held a little more compassion, sounding almost normal.
Yes. Several.
Maybe—
"Mom, there are four types
