A great second chance romance. A must read story. The firefighters opened a bar and grill called Cockloft dedicated to Evan, a firefighter killed in the line of duty. “In engineering terms, a cockloft is that space above the ceiling and below the rafters, similar to an attic. In firefighting terms, a cockloft is a potential death trap, where fire can travel laterally across multiple spaces below, often undetected”.
Cole is a firefighter. He has worked hard to get where he is at. After his best friend was killed in a fire, he was more determined than ever to rise in the ranks. He’s been helping Natalie fix things around the house, mostly out of guilt. Guilt that he let Evan down, guilt that he has feelings for his best friends wife, no not wife but widow. And now she’s dating and I lost my chance.
Natalie lost her husband in the line of duty. “When Evan died, everyone promised they wouldn’t drift away, but of course many did”. Cole comes over to fix things, and that’s it. We use to be friends but I’m nothing but an obligation to him. I lost most of our friends when he died. When do I get to start my life again?
