For as long as I can remember, I’ve lived among a pack of polar wolves – Alpha Luc’s pack specifically. I’d been abandoned by my parents as a young child – no older than five. Alpha Luc’s parents claimed that I was filthy, unhealthy, and on the verge of dying when they found me sitting on the side of the road.

I apparently had told her that I was waiting on Mommy and Daddy to come back to get me.

Years later, here I am, on the morning of my eighteenth birthday, waking up in my small cottage on the outskirts of the pack. I had chosen to live on the edge when the Alpha and Luna at the time told me I could no longer live in their home with them.

Everyone in the pack treated me well and with lots of respect, and Alpha Luc’s parents treated me as their own child. But having a human in close proximity with a child who was an angry, young shifter hadn’t been ideal as Alpha Luc back then was volatile and very angry – still could be sometimes.

So, I’d been placed in the small cottage, and every morning until I became sixteen, Alpha Luc’s parents, Jhenna and Ray, would come bring me breakfast and one of them would stay and make sure I got ready for school.

Now, I normally got up and got dressed, made my own small breakfast – which usually consisted of a yogurt and some kind of fruit with a cup of coffee – and then I went into town to the library for my nine to five shift.

I was drinking my cup of coffee and staring out of the window at the falling snow when someone rudely banged on my front door, causing me to drop my coffee all over myself. I didn’t get visitors. Though the pack was nice to me and welcoming, no one went out of their way to come see me. We conversed in the pack center or if one of them came into the library, but other than that, I was basically a loner.

I shrieked in pain as the scalding coffee splashed over my arms, my feet slipping out from under me. I reached out to catch myself, preparing to use my hands to break my fall, and a scream of pain left my lips when I felt my wrist snap under the impact.

My door crashed in, and Alpha Luc stood in my foyer, staring at me through his black eyes, his nostrils flaring. I blinked through my tears, trying to clear them up as I bit hard on my lip to keep myself from screaming. Oh, Goddess, I was in so much pain, and Luc – the hottest man I’d ever seen in my life – was in my house, staring at me in all of my mess.

All I wanted to do was scream and cry in peace and try to get to the pack hospital, but Alpha Luc had other plans.

Fuck, he finally swore as he rushed over to me. Jesus Christ, I’m so fucking sorry, he apologized, shocking the hell out of me. Alpha Luc didn’t do apologies. He was a right hard-ass ninety-nine percent of the time. I didn’t mean to frighten you."

I moved my arm to cradle my wrist to my chest, but the movement sent white hot pain flashing through me. I cried out and squeezed my eyes shut, my breaths shallowing out as I tried to bring my pain levels back under control.
