T he funny thing is , I think of myself as an honest person.

Do you? the girl behind the counter asked, though she didn’t seem to care. And why would she? She was selling jewellery, not marriage counselling.

Yes, I really do, Alan replied with a vigorous nod. He traced his finger around the outside edge of the glass case, leaving absentminded fingerprints in his wake. "I mean, I value honesty. That must count for something."

Of course. With a polishing cloth, she buffed his smudges until the glass gleamed.  It shone almost as lustrously as the treasures housed inside the case.

Sorry to lay all this on you, Alan rambled.  I have a throbbing need to confess my sins, but I can never seem to tell these things to the one person who deserves to know.  Isn’t that just awful?  I think it’s just awful, don’t you...

His wandering gaze searched her breast for a nametag. When he found himself dreadfully distracted by her cleavage, he shook his head and looked up into her dark eyes.

I’m sorry, he said.  What’s your name?

She smiled. Alan knew that smile. He’d seen it on other women’s lips.

    Yazumi, she introduced herself.

Setting down the cloth, she extended her left hand.  When he took hold of it, he felt a distinct spark shoot from his ring to hers.

That’s a very pretty name. Yazumi. You should be a flower with a name like that.

The intensity of her gaze made him tremble.

Stealing his fingers from her firm grasp, Alan stammered, Don’t you think I’m a terrible person, Yazumi?

Pert and upright, the young woman in the tailored black suit offered a casual shrug. It’s quite common, from what I’ve seen.

She didn’t seem at all offended by the information he’d shared.

Common or not, I’m a terrible person, he went on. He knew he was terrible. He wanted her to agree. I’m honest, but I lie.

Are you lying now? she asked

    No.

Well, then, you’re not as terrible as you could be. Yazumi’s voice gurgled with consolation.

Alan leaned against the jewellery case. All the lights inside made it warm to the touch.

But you see why I need to buy something for my wife, don’t you? he urged. I need to make this up to her.

I understand completely, she said with a knowing smile.
