    Luminescent red and blue pulsed in the night. My patrol car was the first to arrive at the scene. A couple of nosy neighbors, draped in their nightwear, peered from the sidewalk. I drank in the scene; my heart took an erratic beat. 5 years as a sheriff’s deputy, and the most dangerous incident I’ve dealt with was abuelas having one too many at the church barbecue. Now, there was a potentially violent episode for me to deal with. A firm hand grabbed my shoulder.

    Hey, you in there? my partner, Deputy Cassie Jacinto, said as she gave me a concerned look. Beats of red and blue lit across her face as another patrol car pulled into the street, showing her wavy black hair. It pressed against her pale skin, speckled with a few freckles.

    I gave a reassuring pat on her arm as I pushed it away.

    Yeah, I’m good. Just not used to a call at 2 a.m., I think. I stated, my eyes glued to the small white house. Let’s get in there and find out if this is something we can take care of sooner rather than later, I haven’t seen Isabella awake in a couple of days. I opened the car door and began to make my way to the small white house.

    Jacinto and I answered the radio call about a potential domestic disturbance. A neighbor had reported screams originating from inside the house. The neighbors crowded Jacinto and me as we approached the front porch. Each of them clamored with questions.

    Everyone, please step back. This could be a potentially dangerous area. I yelled out, waving a hand across the front of the crowd. Hopping out of their car, Deputy Jones and Deputy Jefferson approached. Jefferson! Jones! Please keep these good people on the sidewalk, I said as I stepped onto the cement stoop.

    Sure thing, Ramirez, the deputies complied as they herded the distressed neighbors back towards the street. I gave Jacinto a
