      Lina's breath stilled.

      Her stomach dropped, and thrill bounced it back up, kick-starting her heart.

      She released a few of her favourite blasphemes, eyes anchored on the uniformed man across the opulent dining hall aboard the Soaring Dragon.

      In conversation with the airship's concierge, he was turned in profile.

      Her surprise slid into familiar admiration—only for a moment. From this distance and angle, he looked much the same as their last encounter.

      A blush seared her cheeks, and a sudden flutter in her belly matched the ship's engine vibrating beneath her feet. The new luxury liner airship was moving out of its berth at the Hong Kong port bound for Europe.

      Straightening her shoulders, she considered options, returning focus on her goal. Confirm the property, and then proceed as instructed.

      Setting the near-translucent teacup on its gold-rimmed saucer, Lina rose from the small table smoothing the skirt of her dress in a single motion.

      Right, direct it would be.

      With a furtive glance toward the corner of the room, she noted her target was still engaged.

      Approaching the uniformed man, the soft tone of his low voice teased the flesh below her ear. Tilting her head just a fraction, her gaze swept over him. He stood firm and straight, at ease and in command of his environment. She doubted that would ever change. She glanced at his badge.

      Constable Lau, how delightful to see you here. How are things at the Hong Kong office?

      The Concierge stiffened at the bold interruption, Lau simply turned toward her, a slow grin spread across his lips.

      I wondered how long it would take you to greet me, Miss Curren.

      She returned the smile. Of course he had seen her.

      We can resume our conversation later, Lau said to the Concierge, who gave a curt bow and departed.

      At this proximity, Lina could see the subtle changes in him.

      A little older, a little more stern from experience, and his eyes, despite their appreciative sweep of her person, were a little harder as they settled on her face. But his smile didn't falter.

      Would you care to join me for tea?

      Perhaps another time. I am on duty.
