From the Author
Soulmates is the first in the Metaphysical Love Stories series. Each book in this series will feature the beloved characters of A, Z, T, and Y in different lives they've lived with one another. Each book will be a standalone story, but readers of all three books in the series will find plenty of connections between the stories!
For anyone who has ever felt like the love they desire is out of this world: This series is for you.
From the Inside Flap
Zane rested at the base of her trunks, played pirate with her fallen limbs as swords, and chased butterflies and bees along the perimeter of her body. She shook with delight, her leaves dancing in a soft symphony of gratitude as his fingers traced the dark scars that emerged on her pale skin each time a branch fell or an arrow missed its target. When the boy walked from his home to the grove, his feet wet from splashing in the stream that ran just beside her, she summoned a bit of wind to rush through her quaking leaves, whispering:
Hello, boy.
The boy grew into a young man, his stout form filling out as he grew upward. She grew with him, but did not age as quickly. The village near his cabin grew as well, encroaching on the valley a bit more each year.
Now he brought his lovers to the grove. During the day, a young woman with whom he shared poems and dreams and whose hand he tenderly held as he walked with her. In the night, a young man to whom he passionately, desperately, achingly made love—his heart filled with an equal mix of shame and desire. Above them her leaves quaked in celebration and anticipation of their love. Beneath them her roots stretched out like a lattice, cradling the boy as he wept in grief that his love could not exist beneath the sun.
Eventually, the boy became a man. That man knew he couldn't live forever in his parents' cabin, so he left. Before he did, he said goodbye to the grove of Aspen trees across the valley, with whom he had spent his life. He whispered that he would visit her if he ever came back.
Over the following years she could hear his voice occasionally carrying across the valley, mingled with the voices of his wife and their young children. Sometimes he came to see her, each year more weighed down with the preoccupations of his life than the last. The visits grew fewer and farther between as time went on. Eventually he stopped coming altogether.
Each year the village grew, and new souls came to visit her. Lovers, mothers, friends, and eventually, men with axes. They cut her faster than she could send up new shoots, and her energy slowly waned. She contracted, each year getting smaller until only a few trees remained.
It was then that he came, walking slowly and deliberately through the dark. His children, now nearly young men and women themselves, were asleep. He remained restless. He hadn't been home in many years and was saddened that his friend was barely visible across the cavernous mouth of the valley.
When he approached her, she was barely able to muster a hello. The night was still, and her leaves few.
He placed his hand on her skin. He could feel everything from that touch, just as he could when he was a boy. The density of the wood, the moisture running beneath the bark, the smell of her leaves when they were crushed underfoot. The barely perceptible quaking of the leaves above him brought a rush of memories. They mingled with new ones as he mentally shared his life with his friend—the laughs of his children, the comfort of his home, the sound of wind running through stalks of wheat.
Together they stood, a small boy named Zane and the silent guardian of his childhood's magic, sharing their life together once more.
After a while he bent down, examining her labyrinth of exposed roots. He pulled a knife from his pocket and took a cutting of one to bring back home.
And they lived happily ever after until (and after) their deaths.

About the authors

Sarah Faeth Sanders has been a storyteller since she was a little girl, when she would sit her
parents down and spin new tales on makeshift stages, always ending her narratives with the
mysterious phrase “A Duck and a Rabbit” instead of “The End.” This tendency to avoid
absolutes followed her into her career as an author with the release of her debut novel,
Soulmates: A Metaphysical Love Story, a reincarnation romance. This tale of destined love and
found family plays with time and avoids absolutes like “The End” through its exploration of the
multiple lives of its characters. Soulmates quickly turned into The Metaphysical Love Stories
series, a series of standalone reincarnation romance novels. Book two, Fated Tides, released in
January 2024.
Sarah grew up in the beautiful, wide-open spaces of Northeastern Nevada. She received her BA
in Sociology in 2012. She attended a private Christian university, inspired by her conversion to
Evangelical Christianity in high school. She began the process of deconstruction at this college
and would eventually leave Christianity behind and embrace her more spiritual upbringing.
Sarah’s process of healing from religious trauma and Evangelical patriarchal control informs
much of her creative work.
Sarah and her partner, Adam, welcomed their son Damian into the world in 2017. In 2022, she
received her MS in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics from the University of
Maryland, Baltimore. She currently lives in the Pacific Northwest, where she draws inspiration
from her natural surroundings to create new worlds. Sarah aspires to become an elusive hedge
witch someday, increasingly one with the forest, communicating with the outer world solely
through her increasingly whimsical and cryptic stories and a few friendly crows trained to deliver
handwritten messages.

I cannot overstate the impact this book has had on me. First of all, it is beautifully written and the characters will stay with you. The story floats seamlessly between Audrey and Zach's current life and glimpses into their many other lifetimes together. In the main storyline, Audrey is raised in Evangelical Christianity when she meets Zach. Throughout her life, she grows, escapes expectations, and learns to spread her wings in incredible ways. The friendships in this book are beautiful. The romance is deep and meaningful. The characters are inspiring.
Whether you're healing from religious trauma or not, this story will leave you feeling hopeful and believing in the power of love and people.
Thank you, Sarah, for writing this beautiful book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024This book was truly captivating and the best one I've read in a while. I lost track of how many times I found myself getting emotional. The story had me hooked from the moment Audrey first saw the boy growing up in the forest all the way to the heartfelt ending. I'm eagerly looking forward to getting my hands on Book II. I loved Zachary, an inspiring character that I strive to be like.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2024Oh, this is so lovely. 🥹 This book has been on my TBR for a while, and I finally made it a priority since book 2 is coming out soon. And I’m glad I did! The concept, the execution, and the characters are all so well thought out and delightful. Occasionally I would have a logistical question (the characters are texting as teenagers and have TikTok in their 20s, but given the timeline, does that mean that part of this book takes place in the future…???) but because of the larger framework I ended up not worried too much about that sort of thing, because the story plays with time and history and REALITY to the point that it becomes moot.
SOULMATES is, in some ways, the cozy, wholesome cousin of This Is How You Lose the Time War. I read it in one sitting and teared up at the end because I’m a sucker for soft feelings.

The author and I went to high school together, but weren't really friends. We should have been, though. Who knew this gem was lying in wait among that imagination? I surely didn't!
Soulmates: A Metaphysical Love Story is something I'm not soon to forget. Or shake.
I am such a huge fan of second chances, friends to lovers, and breaking "the rules". While I felt the story could have been done differently towards the end, it's not my story and the entire premise had me completely intrigued from the beginning.
Sarah's writing style is intoxicating and captivating; I found myself thoroughly enthralled within a dozen or so pages. (I read it entirely in 3 days, which is fast for me!) The bits between the main story were expertly done and my favorite parts. You get several stories in one here, and I loved it.
What a beautiful transformation Audrey's character went through! As someone getting to go this round with my own soulmate, Soulmates has earned such a special place in my heart. It also reminded me just how lucky I am.
The ups, the downs, the tension, the spirit, the passion for life… it is ALL there in Soulmates. Prepare to have your perspective altered, but I guarantee you will not be disappointed with this read.
And just a side note- my favorite chapter is 19.
Thank you for sharing this amazing story with us, Sarah!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2024I finished Soulmates: A Metaphysical Love Story by Sarah Faeth Sanders, last night, and found it to be a very wholesome page turner. The story focuses a great deal on overcoming religious trauma and the power of forgiveness. I don't often read romance novels but I really enjoyed this one!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2023This book was such a heart-wrenchingly beautiful, joyful read. I loved the chapters interspersed with the main love story, on how the two souls were with each other over and over again. I grew up in an environment so like Aubrey’s that I ended up telling my therapist all about this book and the thoughts and feelings it was bringing up for me. Sarah Sanders has done something deeply healing with these ideas and words, the tender connection over lifetimes and planes of Z and A, and I am grateful to have encountered it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2024Recently took a trip to Hawaii. I had to force myself to stop reading it on the flight there because I didn’t want to read it all in one sitting and not having anything to read on vacation. It was so good! Totally recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2022It's difficult to pull off a book with an omniscient point of view, but the omniscient narration makes so much sense for this story. It's a grand love story written through a lifetime that steps into many others. Well written and surprisingly intimate.
