Club Revenge (Dysfunction at its Finest Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

A family forged in battle.

Amora Medina-Jackyl knew one thing well—vengeance. She’d inflicted pain without mercy to those who deserved the punishment. She’d lived by one motto her entire existence-- family was to be protected above all else. An ancient cult murdered her parents and siblings when she was little more than a child. The Order of Angelus hadn’t understood the Hell they’d brought down on themselves that one brutal night.

Amora was many things in her four centuries. A daughter and a sister, a mother, yet she was best known as a killer. When she finally meets her end, Amora will have hundreds, maybe thousands of lives to answer for. Her only wish is to find one moment of peace. She denies her need as much as she fights to protect it. When the one woman who can bring her serenity comes into her life: can Amora destroy century old walls to let her in?

Lies and conspiracies tear at the fabric of sanity—of what’s right. Can truths come to light that change the reality of a family who’s known only the taste of revenge and loss?

If you like a strong female character, this is the book for you. The author sets up a series strong in family, but also fun and witty. Beyond Amora (I want to be her when I grow up) and Lark (who is sweet as can be) are a whole cast of characters, family, that are equally crazy and endearing. I was sad when it ended, but thrilled that it was only the beginning of this series. Everyone should get to know Amora!

I read the first edition of this story in 2015 and very much enjoyed it, therefore I jumped at the chance to read the new, apparently improved, version. By doing so, I’ve discovered it’s not easy to review a revised book without comparing it to the previous one. Especially when I rated the original highly – 4.5 stars.

The first book had female/female and male/female pairing. The new version focuses on the first half of the old, and is a paranormal lesbian romance – a genre I’m fond of. It starts with the heroine witnessing the murder of her parents. The raw brutality and gut-wrenching beginning reeled me in. The story is most definitely dark in places. A tad confusing at times too. There’s talk about the heroine wanting to go to her club, but the club is very much background noise. I personally would’ve liked to have known more the place.

Around the middle of the book the story becomes bogged down with numerous sex scenes. There’s some mild spanking, and a strap-on scene which is sure to appeal to some readers. Personally, I had a difficult time connecting to the main characters, Amora and Lark, their relationship was so hot and cold, I found it difficult to enjoy the erotic content.

Amora’s son Ripper plays a large part in the story, and the interactions between mother and son, had me shaking my head in wonder. I have no clue if it was supposed to be humorous or what the point was. However, the fight scenes between them, as in combat training/sparring, and the way they swore at each other came across as incredibly rude and disrespectful. Which leads me to my next gripe… the dropping of the f-bomb. I’m no prude and am rather partial to the word myself, but the randomness of it being dropped in jarred me out of the story, more than once.

As I write this review, I realize edited and revised doesn’t necessarily equal better, or perhaps the story has improved but my reading tastes have changed vastly over the year. I’m sure readers who haven’t read the first edition will get more out of the story than I did.

As per the first edition, there are a number of grammatical errors. However, they didn’t factor into my rating.

I urge readers to read the blurb, which sums up the story much better than I have. If it appeals to you take a chance on this book, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

While I enjoyed many aspects of this story, I had difficulty getting past the grammatical errors and the frequent run-on sentences and lack of correct punctuation. The story premise is good, though a few scenes happened with apparently little relation to the overall story (the visit to Mael when Boone was already searching for Ada). The banter between mother and son was a bit childish. In general, I liked the world and the characters in it, but it was hard for me to get past the punctuation errors.

Talk about fast moving action! The characters are unique, as is the plot. A definite recommended read.

I really enjoyed Club Revenge. It was very well written with a well thought out plot line. Amora is a vampire with a dark past, and she is out for revenge and she has had centuries to think about the people who have wronged her. After having dealt with most of her past enemies she now sets out to get rid of the bad people in the world. Ripper is Amora's son and he is half vampire and half demon. Being next in line to the throne of the underworld he has to try and work out how he is going to rule and still keep his humanity. When he falls for a human he is faced with the cold truth of how he is going to rule the underworld while still keeping his humanity. The Medina-Jackyl family motto is "never leave any family behind", and when a ghost from Amora's past shows up it just sparks the fire even more.but as a family they will face their enemies and they will face them together.

There were just a few places where I found myself getting a little confused. Just with the way the story flowed. But all in all it is a very well written novel and I loved it. The only reason I am giving a four star review and not five is because there is a need for the author to get someone to proof read her work and pick up the spelling and grammar mistakes. Whilst there weren't that many there are enough to make it noticeable. There are also a few places where the author has used words that are not common and I had to look up the meaning of these words. There are some nice erotic scenes for lesbians and there are also some straight erotic scenes, this is not my cup of tea but they are well written all the same:)

I really did love this book and am looking forward to seeing a sequal and finding out what does happen with the relationships that have started and also what happens with Ripper and his taking over the throne of the underworld.

This was my first go round with Ms. Dabney's work.

    First but not my last.

While my fave genres tend to be m/f pairings in any given category, I do like to read books that go outside my own literary comfort zone. If we didn't do that, we'd never have discovered so many of our favorite authors!

Ms. Dabney's most aggressive power as a writer is her knowledgeable hustling along of both plot line and character development without getting overly mired in background noise.

I found her characters full of life in all its complex and contradictory glory and her grasp of the darker side of everyone's nature compelling and creative.

I'm glad I read it and look forward to grabbing my next read from this lady writer.
