Magic Forged: Magiford Supernatural City (Hall of Blood and Mercy Book 1) Kindle Edition
As someone with barely a flicker of magic, I've spent my life being mocked and surviving fights with bullies. But when my parents die in an accident, and I find myself responsible for our whole wizard house and family, I know my usual tactics aren't going to cut it.
The situation veers from bad to catastrophic when my backstabbing cousin stages a coup and takes my family hostage.
I barely manage to flee, but the only supernatural willing to help me is Killian Drake--the most feared vampire in the region, and a far more deadly villain than the jerk threatening my family.
Is Killian sexy and charismatic? Heck yeah.
He's also so powerful that my flight or fight instincts kick in every time our eyes meet. And he's definitely using me as his personal magic detector in his feud against the local fae.
But Killian is also the first person to believe I might have more than just a scrap of magic. And if I can convince him to train me, I might get strong enough to free my family and get my house back.
I'm not sure what happens when a scrappy wizard is taught how to fight by a hall of deadly vampires, but I'm about to find out.
Magic Forged is the first book in the Hall of Blood and Mercy trilogy, which takes place in the Magiford Supernatural City universe and features vampires, wizards, fae, and werewolves! This trilogy is packed with humor, adventure, and a sweet, slow burn romance between a vertically challenged wizard and the most lethal vampire in town.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020In a genre that is over saturated with vampire based books, it’s hard to set yourself apart from the competition. In the case of this novel, the world building, plot, and politics weren’t revolutionary, but they were interesting. What really makes this shine, though, is the cast of characters.
Let’s start off with our hero, Killian. He’s a true alpha male in charge of all the Midwest vampires. He’s controlling and domineering, yes, but he also pushes his people to be the best and inspires their loyalty. Also, here alpha does not equal player, which for some reason always seems to be the standard. Not once do you see him with another woman, let alone a parade of them. He’s busy running things instead of running around getting busy.
It’s amazing, here’s an author who can write more than two people into her book. There are three main side characters, Celestina, Josh, and Rupert. They are all unique with different and complex personalities, and they interact with our mains throughout the book. They have important and integral roles. I’m so thankful to find a story that puts the characters first.
Finally, let’s chat about our main girl, Hazel. She is AMAZING! I honestly can’t say it enough. Is Killian attractive? Definitely, but not once does my girl Hazel swoon or get weak in the knees just from looking at him (I hate when a main character loses all sense because there’s a good looking guy around!). She’s smart, funny, sarcastic, and compassionate. She’s not looking for a hero, rather she’s trying to become the hero in her own life. For example, at one point she gets jumped. Does she scream for the H to come save her? Nope, she gives a beat down with her purse all while telling Killian that he should’ve let her bring her sword. Hazel legitimately deserves a cheering squad!
I’m so happy that book two is out so I get to dive right in. I definitely recommend this one. I’m so excited to find a winner, and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021My Rating: 4 and a half stars
This. Book. Is. SO. Good! Someone I interact with on Goodreads highly recommended this book (I'm SO sorry but I don't remember who it was!) and I am so deeply sorry that it took me months to finally get to this. Though it wasn't without its hiccups. I actually started and stopped this 3 times before finally getting into it. My initial issue was with how slow it starts off. After Chapter 2 I was hooked and couldn't put it down!
Hazel was a very sassy and entertaining character. I loved how snarky she was. I also liked that she cared for those who she considered friends and people who had helped her along the way. She never took anything lying down and always gave as good as she got. Can you tell I really enjoyed being in her head for the duration of this story?
Killian is on his way to being included in my top 5 Book Boyfriends list of all time. That was how much I loved him. If I could call dibs on him and have him be all mine I would. I adored his sarcastic remarks and how he ended up finding it in himself to have a soft spot for Hazel. The way he had me cackling with almost every remark was a breath of fresh air. I could gush about him for hours at this point but I'll stop it at that ♡
The overall story after it got going was very good! I'm not usually a big fan of murder mystery but this one proved to be an exception. The ending was exhilarating and I'm excited to see where this story is going! I'm also very proud that I called the twist in the last chapter from Killian's POV.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2020This is the perfect fast, fun urban fantasy read--just enough stakes to not be complete fluff, interesting characters, good worldbuilding. With a few caveats, I thoroughly enjoyed, as I usually do Shea's work.
Hazel Medeis is a wizard in a contemporary society where wizards, vampires, werewolves and fae exist and are "out" to the general public. While she has very little magic, Hazel is set to inherit her parents' position as head of their wizard House--both a literal magical house and control of their extended family group. But when they both die unexpectedly, Hazel's much more powerful distant cousin stages a coup, and none of her parents' supposed allies lift a finger to help her. Hazel's last resort is to beg assistance from the council of Midwestern vampires, the only one of whom willing to take her on is their leader: the ruthless, cynical Killian Drake. Of course Killian has his own reasons for wanting a wizard in thrall to him, nor is he interested in helping Hazel regain her home. So Hazel is left to adjust to life as a servant in a vampire court--which is not at all what she'd expected given the fearsome reputation of vampires and of Killian in particular. Not that they're secretly marshmallows, or anything, but they're not monsters--just people.
My couple of caveats: I found it a little difficult to feel impacted by the series of murders that takes place over the course of the book. The characters were weirdly blase about them, apart from being upset that a serial killer seems to be stalking the vampire community. But the narrative doesn't dwell very much on the killings other than they're happening, almost zooming by and handwaving away most of the emotional impact. I cared way more when Hazel had to dodge attacks sent by her cousin, and at the climax once she's trying to prevent the next murder before it happens.
It was kind of weird that literally no one other than Killian was interested in sheltering Hazel. Like, if a coup happened in their household, would they want everyone else to shrug and say it was an internal matter and none of their business? It does turn out to be a plot point that all supernaturals are turning inwards and only protecting their own small in-groups, but you'd think the wizard families would want to discourage the idea that coups could work if only to keep someone in their own house from trying the same thing. Instead, they all seem to start helping Hazel's cousin, even after Killian forcefully demonstrates that he will defend her.
Speaking of which, I have mixed feelings about Hazel and Killian because of the hugely imbalanced power dynamic between them. He holds all the cards, and they both know it, but when he doesn't abuse or take advantage of her, even though he's keeping her around for his own reasons, she starts to trust and develop feelings for him. I got some uncomfortable Stockholm Syndrome vibes that I don't get from Beauty and the Beast, much as everyone likes to joke about that. His feelings about her evolve, but at the beginning she's no more than a tool and a plaything to him, something new and different that he finds amusing. Things may change and power may balance out between them in future books, but anyone made uncomfortable by Stockholm Syndrome undertones should avoid this one. That said, I did enjoy their later interactions as she gets comfortable enough to sass him.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025I finally and coming around to writing a review after my third read through. Each time she has added a new trilogy I start from the beginning and find it just as satisfying as the first time! What stands out most is her unique humor and ability to weave a plot with story telling elements that multiple books in are key to the story line. This makes it enjoyable to read again and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic clean fantasy with the lovable characters and the perfect blend of action and humour
As always with K.M. Shea there are lovable characters, lots of action, plenty of humour and a little romance blended together in a great story. I have all three books in this trilogy and I love them all.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great take on the world of witches, vampires and other supernaturals
From the very first chapter I was sold! It's a pity that we don't get to see much more of the magical house and the culture of witches but it was just as much fun to get to meet the vampires. Especially because surprisingly enough there was a lot of mythology and politics in this book. Even though there is a lot going on it never felt like something was rushed or completely forgotten. The author made sure that the focus was constantly on the right things and that all the reveals and developments were following a very natural pace. And the latter also goes for the romance. It wasn't the main storyline of this book, but it was there. I can't wait to dive into the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Voilà une belle surprise
