Review
"Eden Butler's storytelling is both intense and endearing. Her characters draw you into a world you can't help but embrace and love."Andrea Johnston, author of Whiskey and Honey
"Butler's ability to write down-to-earth characters, with real-world issues, and maintain enough tension to fill up a small village is enviable. Ryder and Reese share a past and a rough history to make this story flat-out compelling. Slick, raw and full of sexually charged moments, Roughing the Kicker is the first of what is sure to be an amazing series." --Trish F. Leger, author of the Amber Druids Series.

Eden Butler is a writer of contemporary, fantasy, and romantic suspense novels and the nine-times great-granddaughter of an honest-to-God English pirate. This could explain her affinity for rule breaking and rum.
When she's not writing or wondering about her possibly Jack Sparrowesque ancestor, Eden reads, cooks, and spends too much time in her garden perfecting her green thumb while waiting for the next New Orleans Saints Superbowl win.
She is currently living under teenage rule alongside her husband in southeast Louisiana.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2018Eden has done it again! This is seriously a kick a** book (see what I did there lol). First off, a woman in the NFL is awesome in and of itself. But when that woman is Reese Noble, watch out. Aside from her amazing ability, she has got sass for miles, a temper that could rival any, and a heart of gold. When she smiles huge and lays a smack down on Ryder, it’s epic (when you read it, you’ll know what I’m talking about). And speaking of Ryder, yum yum yum. An amazing quarterback, a bit of a lost soul, but when he comes back, oh boy watch out. In case you couldn’t tell, I very much loved this!! Jump on it quick!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2019I was looking for a change of pace from all of the romantic comedies I've been reading lately, and "Roughing the Kicker" definitely fit the bill. It is a very angsty story, but well written and engaging. I particularly liked the idea of a story featuring the first contracted female pro NFL player, and the added complication of a second chance romance with one of her fellow players was just too much for me to resist.
There was quite a bit of history between main characters Reese and Ryder, so they had a lot to work through before they were even able to interact professionally, much less contemplate rekindling their former romantic connection. As a result, the story featured a very intense, emotional, slow burn relationship development that I enjoyed. In addition, Ryder and Reese were both very likeable, sympathetic characters, and it was easy for me to wish them both the best, both individually and together.
Finally, this book featured a number of intriguing secondary characters, which offer a lot of possibilities for future books in the series. I look forward to reading the next book when it is released.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2018I love sports stories....I love romance....and I love a book that embraces both! Eden Butler has taken us back to her NO Steamers world inhabited by Kona Hale to bring us the story of Reese Noble, the first female place kicker in the NFL. Reese and Ryder's story is a roller coaster ride from contempt for his attitude to understanding and, eventually, their HEA. Highly recommend and look forward to the next installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2022I’m glad I read the book because I enjoy stories about strong, successful women, but wish some of it had been written differently. Reese is the first female in the NFL and a talented placekicker. The hostility and active torment she faces from her coaches, teammates, fans, media, and oppposing teams was discouraging. I liked the way she would either pushback or block out these distractions to do her job. She has a complicated history with the QB on her team. College sweethearts that were in love, but were abruptly torn apart when Ryder blamed her in part for the tragic death of his sister who was Reese’s BFF. They haven’t seen or spoken to each other in 10 years. This book starts when she joins Ryder’s team and follows their relationship during the football season as they clash and try to work together and heal the hurts from their past. The book was well edited and written. My biggest complaint came from the drama with Ryder’s gf. She was pretty awful and wasn’t given any redeeming qualities. Apparently she wasn’t always so bad as Ryder comments to himself at one point that she’s changed into a petty b***h. He thinks he should break up with Greer and doesn’t want to have sex with her anymore. She embarrasses him in public. *spoiler: He’s attracted to Reese and has kissed Reese a few times. Then….four months go by (maybe longer) and he’s still with Greer and showing up with her at every function? Greer implies to Reese that she’s pregnant and she and Ryder are starting a family? Does that mean he’s been sleeping with Greer all this time? What a creep. He doesn’t want Greer but is still stringing her along with him thinking every week that he should finally break up with her? I didn’t like Greer but also didn’t think she deserved that treatment either. And he was really harsh when he broke up with her. My respect for Ryder fell pretty low. He was sleeping with someone for months with someone he’s no longer attracted to or even likes because he just never quite makes the effort to break up? while blowing hot and cold with Reese and falling back in love with her? I hated this subplot and am surprised that most other readers seem to give him a pass for this pretty despicable behavior. It would have been so much better imo if Ryder had broken up with Greer early on when he was no longer attracted to her and then he was free to slowly build back a relationship with Reese with no implications of cheating (physical or emotional) with either woman. Many of the secondary characters were very likable and that helped the story. I like the support that Gia and Cat gave Reese to support and promote her career.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2018This is a great second chance romance that also he some angst to it. Reese and Ryder fell in love 10 years ago but were separated by tragedy. Their paths cross again and they fight it as long as they can. The road back to each other is worth the ride.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2018Am I wrong for trying to prolong the end of thus book? I just loved it. And to think this was the first book ti out me through so many emotions. A roller coaster ride with the motion sickness. And not to mention the story tackling the good ole boys ways. A great book worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2018I absolutely love Reese and Ryder. I also enjoy how this story links some of the characters from Thin Love series. I felt I was coming home. Reece is one tough chick. I love her!
