The Day My World Stood Still
My stomach flipped, and my heart raced when I saw her standing at the top of the driveway. Her long, dark curls brushed back and forth across her waistband as she walked. She was short, but she had legs for days, accentuated by the short, white denim cutoffs she was wearing. Her light pink tank top clung to her body.
Who is that? Whoever she is, I need to know everything about her. How have I never seen her at school? She’s not someone anyone would miss.
I turned the engine off and opened my door. She walked up the steps at the side of the house, opened the back door, and walked inside. Ricky walked out the front door.
It’s about time you got here. We were supposed to work on the old car an hour ago.
He ran down the steps and toward the small garage at the top of the driveway.
Sorry, some of us have real jobs. I just got off work at the tire shop twenty minutes ago. I headed right over. Show me this great deal you got. I have a feeling great deal means a heap of garbage.
The back door opened as we walked by. Ricky, don’t forget you said you’d look at the washing machine. It’s leaking again.
Okay, Jenna. Let me work on the car for a bit first.
I heard the annoyance in his voice and had a feeling this was an ongoing conversation between them.
Ricky, you promised!
Wait, that’s Jenna? Ricky’s YOUNGER sister. Oh, shit! That’s why I’ve never seen her before she’s twelve. Note to self, stay as far away as possible. That girl doesn’t look twelve.
I looked up at her. I know how to fix washing machines. I’ll make sure we look at it and the car.
Thanks. By the way, nice car. Will you teach me to drive it?
I shook my head. When you’re sixteen and have a license.
I headed into the garage. Trouble. This girl is trouble.
Sorry about my sister. She’s been on me to fix the washer for a few days,
Ricky said as he walked into the garage behind me.
I turned and looked at him. Then let’s fix it before we work on the car. It’s probably something easy.
I walked over to the washing machine and pulled it back from the wall. Have you even looked at it, Ricky?
No.
I started laughing when I immediately saw the problem. "It’s the drain hose. It’s clogged. It will take me ten minutes. I’ll fix it and then help you with the car. That car is going to take us hours every week for at least the next year."
Five minutes later, Jenna walked into the garage and leaned against the doorframe. She looked over at me. "Thank you. It’s been leaking for a few weeks, and someone is too busy running off to some private property street race or the flat track and doesn’t have time to look at it."
You’re welcome. I’ll finish in about five minutes. Do you have a load to throw in? If so, start it, and we can make sure it doesn’t leak while I’m working on the car. I’m Marco, by the way.
I know. Ricky told me you were coming over. I’m Jenna.
"I know.
