Division - Desy Smith
Chapter One – Essence
24 HOURS LATER
Planet: Gaia
Women’s Division: Diara
∗
WHY WOULD YOU NEED to know how to seduce a man?
Cher questions outloud from the cockpit, overhearing my conversation with the others.
Yeah, I thought you didn’t like casual sex,
Amelia states groggily, having woken up from her forced slumber not even fifteen minutes ago.
I don’t . . .
I begin, not knowing what to say. I know without a doubt in the history of Diara, a woman has never been given to a man. It isn’t who we are, and it is against all of what Highness and Diara stand for. I suppose I should be honest with them. They deserve to be prepared for when Highness one day trades them too like fruit.
‘Traded?’ Cher mentally questions, reading my mind. ‘Your thoughts are everywhere today.’ Why did this have to happen like this? Why couldn’t Highness wait for my return before dropping this bombshell on me? How in the hell will I break this to Cher? ‘You’re scaring me,’ she replies mentally. I ignore her not knowing what to say.
Autopilot is engaged,
Tara announces inside the shuttle, making all of us look up toward the speakers. I hear things being tossed about in the cockpit, more than likely by Cher, before she speaks to Lucy and walks toward us, her arms folded over her chest.
I’ll be staying with Emperor moving forward,
I finally tell them. I look at their confused faces. As his Queen,
I add, to which all of their mouths drop open.
∗
Let me talk to Highness, Cher tells me mentally, taking me away from that memory. Who knew my life could change so quickly? Just twenty-five hours ago, I woke up, got in the shuttle with Cher and the others, and traveled to Earth for a recon mission. A normal monthly occurrence for me. I suppose I’m at fault for expecting a different outcome. I knew this day would eventually come. Well, I didn’t know this would be the specific outcome. I always thought I’d die sooner rather than later, due to my being an anomaly. I now know there are worst things than death.
Let me talk to Highness, Cher says again. I look down at the shirt still in my hand and place it in my suitcase.
You’d be wasting your breath, I tell her mentally.
You can’t really think that, Essence, she replies, sounding somber. She can’t be the monster you, well, Grand Dame makes her seem."
At the mention of Grand Dame, I look to the crumpled-up letter with Grand Dame’s official seal. All of the Legacies, the six women who escaped Earth with Highness, five hundred years ago, each have a personal seal. They wear these seals somewhere on their person at all times.
Grand Dame’s seal is worn around her neck. The letter spoke about my union,
Grand Dame’s words, not mine, with Emperor. She told me to forget about our previous conversation and to submit myself to Emperor, mentally, physically, and emotionally.
∗
As his Queen!
Amelia exclaims.
When did the men of Scipio start taking queens?
Green questions.
‘He knows?’ Cher ask mentally, to which I nod my head once. ‘Who told him?’
‘Highness’, I reply, making her gasp. Both Amelia and Green look at her questionably. I didn’t need to go into detail with Cher, about why Highness now knowing isn’t a good thing.
He wants to eventually unite the men and women,
I answer Green’s question, saying it the way Grand Dame told me when inquired about the union.
But why you?
Amelia wonders, no longer sounding sleepy but fully alert. I knew not to share the real reason with them. Who knew how Highness would respond to her subjects knowing someone else could do what she does? Even if the women in Diara didn’t know Highness could do it.
Maybe it’s because you’re Grand Dame’s second,
Green states.
No, that’s Serenity,
Amelia replies.
Serenity is definitely Grand Dame’s third,
Green says matter of factly.
Who cares?
Cher replies back, giving them both looks and shutting them up instantly. Green swallows before she speaks, this time in a mere whisper.
Are you afraid?
We women were taught fear does not make you weak. Instead, fear made you aware, cautious even, and it aids you in overcoming whatever obstacles are presented to you. Yet, this situation is different. I couldn’t overcome this, I had to become Emperor’s Queen. I suppose I could accept whatever future I would have with Emperor, but that isn’t who I am. I’ll admit, I didn’t too much care for men now. But we live long lives, it’s bound to change eventually, and I want the chance to choose whoever I would lay with. Instead of voicing these thoughts, I shrug, not wanting to appear weak, especially in front of Amelia.
‘Are you?’ Cher questions mentally.
‘Yes,’ I reply, knowing I could be both honest and transparent with her.
I’d be,
Amelia says, surprising me. We all turn our attention to her. None of us have ever lived with a man. Yes, we’ve had sex with them, slept with them, but this is new.
I take note of Green and Cher, nodding their heads in agreement. They didn’t prepare us for that.
I never thought I’d see the day where I agree with Amelia.
We women in Diara were taught how to be strong and independent, only relying on ourselves and the other women. Highness ensured that we didn’t need the males in any capacity, except one. Of course, even then, we have our hands and toys to keep us satisfied.
And,
Amelia adds, he’s not like any other male in Scipio. He’s different.
No shit, I think.
Different how?
Cher questions out loud, turning her annoyance
