      Snowy Walks - Violet

      Snow drifted down from the gloomy blue-grey skies as Violet and Cypher made their way to the glowing lights of Green Holly Inn. Hands interlaced, they swung lightly between them, Violet occasionally pointing out the gorgeous snow-topped trees and Cypher humming along in agreement.

      It was pretty.

      It was all pretty.

      They'd gone for an after dinner walk in the evening, unbothered by the chilly weather and desolate location of the middle of nowhere, nestled at the foot of a great looming monster of a mountain.

      Oscar was there on work and like the good Bonded that they were, Cypher and Violet tagged along for the sheer fun of it. Hopping between realms and ferreting out the occasional adventure was now something of a habit for all of them.

      For Oscar, he was handling another family-related acquisition of a small family-owned business, offering them the benefits of his family's protection and extensive funding to keep the Green Holly Inn open and running during the sparse months.

      The LaRurente Clan was known for impeccable hospitality across the realms and every new acquisition knew what they were getting into, when they took on the name and branding.

      Violet tugged Cypher along a little faster, intent on turning her steps slightly off of the designated pathway to climb onto the snowy rock off to the side.

      Really? Cypher asked, amused. He let himself be pulled off the thin, barely visible dip in the ground and towards the obvious dark lump of rock.

      Snow was falling, but it had yet to properly collect on the ground, the temperature still not quite near that perfect freezing point. The dull browned tips of grass still stuck up in various tufts along the dirt path leading down from the dozens of mountain trails.

      Behind them, Mount Sulemun loomed overhead, tall, dark and imposing as the darkening sky went from blue-gray to rich navy hues, twinkling pinpricks of starlight popping into existence.

      Crisp, cool mountain air swirled around them, prompting a delightful giggle from Violet as she pulled free of Cypher's grasp to hop up on the large rock. She'd seen it on the way up the trail and had been too cozy hugging Cypher's arm to care about exploring any further.

      Now, in the cool air and more awake with the promise of stormy weather to come, her Storm element was at work and Violet was happy.

      It's a rock, Violet said, by way of explanation. She clambered atop the slippery stone, boots finding purchase on the ice by way of the stabilization charms on the thick reinforced soles.

      It took her a half-minute to stand triumphantly at the very top of it, hands on her hips, face tilted up to the soft snowfall, her grin wide and carefree.

      So I see, Cypher teased. It's the fourteenth rock you've had to climb on the way down.

      Violet stretched her arms overhead with a sigh. Those are the rules. I don't make the rules, she said, holding out a hand to be steadied so she could hop down.

      Obligingly, Cypher held out a hand, his grip firm as a wisp of shadow curled around her to aid in the descent. Of course not, he said. It's just a rock that must be climbed.

      Absolutely! Violet touched down on the grassy ground, dry grass crunching under her feet. I wish Oscar could've come. Aren't the negotiations about done?

      The family's stalling, Cypher said. He curled an arm around her waist, pulling her close to his side. They want the financial backing because of all the bad luck they've had recently.

      Violet's brow furrowed. She allowed him to turn them towards the direction of the worn dirt path again. You checked though, right? It's not some weird jinx or a bad luck hex or something, right?

      Right, he confirmed. I'd say sabotage if it wasn't for the fact that nothing's happened since we've been there. It looks more like things were just slowly wearing out. Nothing I could pinpoint, anyway.

      I hate sabotage, Violet said, scuffing her feet along the dry grass to hear it crunch and crackle. They're nice people. They deserve better than someone trying to chase them out of here. I thought it was a mountainside stop for a reason.

      It is. It's a pretty spot. Good summer and autumn traffic. Not so much in the winter and spring. It's a little too isolated this far out and they don't have enough of the expected amenities.

      Violet huffed. But that's what makes it fun.

      We also have magic, darling, he reminded her. We don't have to worry about frostbite, frozen pipes, or lack of electricity.

      Just good wi-fi, Violet said, dryly. Or rather, a decent inter-realm connection.

      He snorted. You've sent in your last set of edits, right?

      Of course! Would I be out here tromping around in the woods if I wasn't?

      Cypher shot her a look.

      Hey! That was one time. One. I have not missed a single deadline since- Violet faltered, her face warming. Cypher!

      He laughed softly, his voice low and deep. I know, I know. You're a very good writer and you keep all of your deadlines.

      She pouted at him, untangling from the warm embrace. It was one time and it wasn't even my fault. They moved the deadline up and I was the one who had to-

      He poked her shoulder. Tag, you're it.

      What? Wait-! Cypher!

      And they were off and running, Cypher at the inhuman
