Dragons' Daughter (The Wordmage's Tales) Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Life in Aeco City is hard. No one knows this better than Fernanda, the orphaned half-elf. After seeing her parents killed by humans and shunned by the elves, she is left to the bitterest of existences. But even the hardiest of pickpockets and shoplifters must have a refuge, and Fernanda’s is at the heart of the city, in a location where she must always stay hidden for if she were ever discovered, she would be put to death. One night, Fernanda faces off a pair of thieves wanting to make away with the consecrated jewels of her sanctuary. Can she stand by and watch as they plunder the last haven she has?

Xavier has been trying to find a way back to Fernanda. Since he left the sanctuary, all he can think about is the “family” he was forced to leave behind. After years of trying, he finally has an opportunity to get back inside and get Fernanda out of danger, but to make it happen, he has to lie to a friend—a lie that risks bringing death in its wake.

Dragons' Daughter is one of The Wordmage's Tales, a standalone accompanying The Apprentice Storyteller. The apprentice has learned from master storyteller, Viola Alerion, and now he performs these classic tales from the Haldrian Empire in his own right

Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author, Astrid V.J. was born in South Africa. She is a trained social anthropologist and certified transformational life coach. She currently resides in Sweden with her husband and their two children. In early childhood, she showed an interest in reading and languages—interests which her family encouraged. Astrid started writing her first novel at age 12 and now writes fantasy in a variety of genres, exploring her passion for cultures and languages. When she isn’t writing, Astrid likes to read, take walks in nature, play silly games with her children, do embroidery, and play music.

Astrid writes transformation fiction: incorporating transformation principles in novels, rather than writing another self-help book. She loves exploring the human capacity for transformation and potential to achieve success in the face of adversity. Astrid is interested in minority group questions, considerations on social standards of beauty and the negative consequences these have, and would like to make the fantasy genre accessible to people of non-white, non-Christian backgrounds. Astrid feels the fantasy genre has become too restrictive with limited representations of race, ethnicity and culture. She seeks to explore other paths on this writing journey, incorporating her background in anthropology and psychology to create engaging experiences, which also provide food for thought on the diverse topics she finds most important. These include: racism, minority rights, cultural diversity, culture change, intolerance, humanity’s environmental impact, the representation of people on the autism spectrum in among the general populace, the human capacity for transformation, and much more.

A thought-provoking tale of personal transformation

A thought-provoking tale of personal transformation
The power of choice is central to this novella as each character has a chance to change their future if they have the wisdom to seize the opportunity. One character hardens himself and walls up his heart, while another regrets his actions and chooses to be guided to a better path. Though short, it is a deeply moving story about how our lives and decisions impact ourselves and others. The world-building is exquisite, and the intriguing dragon-based religious system in what seems to be a pantheistic universe hints at a greater Creator. The author's style and vivid word choice immerse you in the story from the opening scene and grip you until the end. Loved it!

"Her smile spanned galaxies. It lit a thousand stars, and it filled Xavier with that tantalising sense of home. This was what he’d been seeking. This was everything he’d ever wanted."

Storytelling.  Something we grow up with if we're lucky, sitting around someone in our life who tells fabulous tales for learning or just entertainment. And I am a sucker for an engrossing tale.

This addictive novella starts out with a young man about to tell a pack of shifter cubs a story.
However, after starting it, I completely forgot it was a story within a story, and as his story ends, I was surprised to suddenly be back to the characters from the beginning, blinking like I'd finished a whole other book. I was a bit disappointed when it was over, a tale told.

*Note: this isn't about dragons, nor is it love in the romantic sense, more of a familial love of found family. I also thought it might have a medievel setting from the cover, however, it's not set in any recognizable time period, and I didn't realize it had a touch of space opera to it until I completed it.

This is the story I wanted Romeo and Juliet to have. Not that Dragons' Daughter is at all a retelling of that famous tale, but I loved the themes of hope and redemption and second chances that wove through a tale of star-crossed lovers, unfortunate accidents and tragedy to lead to a most unexpected transformation. I guess it was reminiscent in places but more because of some of the underlying themes than the overt story line. This was a story of people given choices and not locked into the fate life handed them.

As with other Wordmage's Tales, Dragons' Daughter is a superbly told, richly imagined story that starts with the familiar, but then takes truly original and unexpected paths. Where previous stories have included some aspects of magical realism, science fiction and fantasy elements, this story delves into mysticism and paranormal in a way that is more resonant with Eastern mythologies. This short, engaging read is full of nuggets of wisdom and things to ponder, but manages to stay light.

Another lovely Wordmage’s tale, this one slightly melancholical, magical & transformatinal tale, which despite some sadness has a hopeful feel. Fernanda is a street urchin hiding in the Dragon temple until a person she considered a friend breaks in to steal stuff. I loved Fernanda’s fierce survival instinct and her pure heart. In a short pagespan the author managed to show the transformation of lives of more than one character, which is no easy feat. I loved the worldbuilding and the philosophical ending. There were definitely some sage bits & sayings that, once again, reminded me of Coelho’s books.

Recommended for lovers of 90-minute short reads, newly minted fairytales, transformational coming-of-age stories that make you reassess the judgments we pass and the people we blame.

Homeless after her parents are murdered, Fernanda is forced to hide out in a sprawling temple complex and steal food from a nearby market.

But she's no ordinary girl. Half-human, half-elf, she's ostracized and alone, or so she thinks. Xavier (also called Hav The Bright) watches out for her and, unknown to Fernanda, tries to help her.

Things get complicated when she's almost caught and runs afoul of a street gang and its leader, Emilio. How these three fates interact is a poignant and stirring fantasy tale. As always with this author, there's a message embedded in the fiction, which I appreciate. And I liked that the novella was well-written. It stirred my heart strings and should do the same for you.

One of the tales told in Finding the Way, this is during part 2. This is a story about three lost children and the choices they choose to make. Fernanda is a half elf child that is scorned at every turn and has taken to thieving to survive. She is on the run from the law when she stumbles across a street gang made up of children. Once she escapes, she takes refuge in the temple but her safe place isn’t safe anymore. One of the acolytes tells her to meet with him later in the day and the events that unfold from there shape the lives of everyone involved. This was such a touching story that had an emotional gutpunch. I loved it.

This story is so like the life that many lead, and in Aeco City it is very hard. When you are a half breed, it is even worse, especially after your family through you out into the woods, and you had to figure out how to eat and live, all by yourself! That is how it started for Fernanda, a beautiful half human and half elf. She ended up learning how to be a shoplifter and pick-pocket, and got close to Xavier... who was like her family, and they 'lived' out of the sanctuary. Then Xavier just left... Years later, she ended up finally seeing him again, and wanted to connect with him, he was her family... Things went terribly wrong, and an accident cost Fernanda her life.
Things then go on another amazing trail for Fernanda... she ends up being able to be a coach of sorts, but she really just wants to be with Xavier.
Fernanda never gives up on doing good... or on Xavier!
To read this short story, you will not be disappointed!

For quite some time I wanted to dive into Astrid V.J.’s Wordmage-series. I now did so actually by accident when I bought her latest release Dragons’ Daughter. It’s a novella that is situated in the world and two of the main characters of the series are mentioned briefly. The main part of Dragons’ Daughter is a story within a story and I really enjoyed it. The writing is beautiful and really matches my idea of a (master) storyteller captivating his audience. It is a story about the freedom and the power of choice, of the transformation one might go through by that choice and finally about facing the consequences that every action has. The story had a very unexpected twist that not just snuck up on me, but pounded me to the floor like one of these huge weights in comics that flattens characters walking on tright above the marked ‘X’ on the street.

Brilliantly done, now more than I ever I need to read this series!

5.0 out of 5 stars A short tale to share

This was a short tale. From start to finish, wonderful. I usually try to use a lot of words to sum up a story without spoilers. This time, if you enjoy short fantasy stories which are also clean and about compassion and love, here is a story for you. But in every love there is sadness somewhere.
