Breaking Fae Spells (Magical Artifacts Institute Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 290 ratings

Careful what you wish for…

It’s been four weeks since I began working at the Institute, and so far Aidan’s been ignoring me, nobody will give me the password to the Institute’s database, and I’m stuck on reception desk duty, leaving me eager for some artifact action. So when an urgent, anonymous tip about a dangerous artifact comes in while I’m the only one around, I decide to act on it.

Result? An ordinary artifact in a box. Problem? The mysterious spell that came with the box and is now attached to me.

I’ve been had, and if Aidan finds out before I show him I can fix it, my job is toast. But figuring out what particular brand of magical doom hangs over my shoulders is not easy, and as I dive deeper into the part-Fae world, I realize that these kinds of favors don’t come cheap—someone wants the Institute to pay in full, and they won’t accept coin.

Breaking Fae Spells is the third book in the Magical Artifacts Institute series—a fun, fast-paced Urban Fantasy series featuring tricky magic, adventure, and an opposites-attract slow burn romance.

Fae are tricky fellows, but I suspect humans might just give them a run for their money. The characters are vastly interesting, and reading this series is very close to if not addictive. The plot is straightforward, and the premise is getting the potion to reverse the the memory occlusion spell our main character accidentally triggered. To do that, they went through a lot of dangerous trials. I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series.

Whee, Maddie and Aiden are bickering their way through another adventure! What could go wrong?

You guys. You guys. I *loved* this book. Maddie and Aiden have both done some growing — Maddie's actually followed protocol (before giving up and jumping in with both feet), and Aiden is *not an emotional icicle* this time around! And the mechanics of the situation they get stuck in were so interesting and well-balanced.

So Maddie is in, finally, with her dream job, and she really did make it an impressively long time before doing what she does best and tumbling into a magical adventure; the stakes felt higher this time, though, and due to... circumstances... Aiden's growing concern is coming through increasingly strongly. I don't want to give things away, because Isa Medina has really done an amazing job of pulling at the reader's emotions here; my stream-of-consciousness reaction post to Breaking Fae Spells is filled with exclamation points, 💔, 😍... It's so good. So, so good.

And wow, the setup going forward! Up to this point we've basically had one-off adventures with faint hints of trouble rumbling beneath the surface, but that changes in a big way by the end of Breaking Fae Spells. I am so excited to find out what all is actually going on here, and what Maddie is going to do next.

I was fortunate enough to read an ARC copy of Breaking Fae Spells, but I loved it so much that I bought a copy as soon as it came out!

This book picks up with Maddie starting her job at the Institute and of course Maddie does her best to stay out of trouble, for a little while. ;)

I loved that this time Maddie's impulsiveness got her into a situation which isn't easy to solve. In fact, there was a situation where it got worse and I panicked for her! lol I did love the little quirk Maddie developed because of the spell and I did find myself chuckling at some of the things she said. Definitely one of the best spells of the series where I sat at the edge of my seat to see how they would break it.

Part of me struggled with pacing a little more in this book, it's still a fun, fast, and easy read but I think I wanted to see more of the fae or fae world. I think I also wanted to see more of the Eyes in action or learn a bit more of why they are so special or how Maddie seems to attract them. I did love how Aidan needed to face some of his inner conflicts in this book.

I absolutely loved the battle Maddie and Aidan are in with the monster. Those scenes had my heart thumping and I tensed in anticipation as I read. The book got better the more I read from this point.

The cliffhanger ending had me dying to know what happens next! I still highly recommend this book if you enjoyed Isa's previous books.

3.5 out of 5 rating for me!

These are short but good. I’m just worried bc there’s only one left now. Totally enjoying the series and wish there was tons more!

I recently read Stealing Fae Heirlooms and it made me realize that I never finished the original books in the Magical Artifacts Institute series. So I happily spent a few days binge reading books 1-4.5 and boy, am I really glad that I did! I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed Maddie and her schemes. I love her spirit, no matter how tough things get, she refuses to give up. I also love the creative solutions she comes up with when faced with what appears to be insurmountable odds. I like her growing relationship with Aidan and hoping for more as the series progresses. I read the first 4.5 books right in a row over a few days because I really wanted to see what happened next. That’s a compliment to the author, but I also didn’t stop to write reviews for each book, which always makes it difficult to write them later without giving away any spoilers. So, I will just say that I really enjoyed the series and definitely recommend it!

The first book I was willing to overlook the MC's childish, no respect or common sense. However, I hoped the second book would even some of that out. But this book, the third, is the worst yet.

What can I say that I haven't said with the previous books?
Maddie is reckless, funny, resourceful, and sweet. Aidan is also resourceful, and sweet (although he pretends to be gruff and distant), but he is the responsible and serious one (he does have a sense of humour, however).
They are always willing to risk themselves to save the other one, and although Aidan would probably say otherwise to keep Maddie safe, they work very well together and make a great team.
In this book, Maddie's recklessness catches up with her, and she has to face some consequences. Whether she'll learn something from this and show some restraint in future, I guess we'll have to wait and see...
There were some swoon-worthy moments like the one where Maddie is sitting in a chair and Aidan asks her something while leaning on her chair (It sounds vague but trust me, you'll know what I'm talking about when you get to that part) and many sweet moments throughout the book.
My only complaint (and it's the same one from the previous books) is that I wish the books were longer to be able to enjoy the story and the characters more because you really don't want to leave them.
I highly recommend this series if you want to read something that will brighten your day, leave a smile on your face, and warmth in your heart!!!

(An ARC was provided for my honest review. I was not compensated in any other way. This my honest opinion on the book.)

But I do love these. So much packed into small books. Great storylines and characters, but especially good at plots. Awesome stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars More urban fantasy adventure!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 27, 2021
Breaking Fae Spells by Isa Medina is the third in the Magical Artifacts Institute quartet of cheerful and energetic urban fantasy novellas about manic pixie girl Maddie, a woman desperate to score her dream job. And she’s made it at last! Maddie finally begins working in the Institute, but it’s not quite what she envisioned. Stuck on reception duty, she’s feeling a little neglected as the Institute’s handsome director seems to be avoiding her, and she’s not been given the chance to go near any dangerous magical artifacts. But when she happens on a lead to a potentially dangerous artifact from a mysterious caller, Maddie decides to take the initiative and investigate herself.

Smart idea, right? Nope! Poor Maddie inadvertently triggers a spell which starts to erode her memories, and she’ll need all the help she can get to break the spell before she forgets what a magical artifact is!

This is my favourite of the Magical Artifacts Institute books so far! As Maddie realises she’s dun goofed, she tries desperately to fix her problems before the grumpy director Aidan finds out and sacks her, but trying to break a spell which leaches your memories is no easy task. What I loved about Maddie’s dilemma is that she’s racing against the clock to save her own memories, but as more disappear, the situation becomes desperate and I really felt Maddie’s anxiety and fears as she forgets things dear to her and worries she’ll never get them back.

This story also introduces the legendary half-Fae sorcerer Lockhart, who is a lovable pain in the ass that’s willing to help Maddie for a price. I can see him with his own spin-off story. This third book is also full of the excitement and adventure that I’ve come to enjoy from this series as the characters explore more of Faerie and battle Fae creatures. Watching Maddie outsmart sorcerers and Fae was definitely a highlight. Plus, the slow-burn romance finally leads to a kiss! Of sorts!

Honestly, I had so much fun with this third book that I’m struggling to think of any complaints, only that this story does end on a cliffhanger – which means I need to painfully wait for the concluding fourth book!

If you’ve enjoyed the first two Magical Artifacts Institute novellas, then you’ll love this one! Even though it takes a more serious turn, this adds depth to the characters and makes their adventures much more satisfying.

5.0 out of 5 stars The plot thickens! A pleasure to read!

This time things are more tense, Maddie has to learn some harsh lessons and navigate a mystery that could make heads spin.
Twists and turns and an emotional roller coaster is the ride we’re taken on, but Maddie is Maddie so that sassy sharp wit is still ever present.

It’s been a pleasure and I look forward to unraveling more of the mystery in the next book.

The fun continues here. I was groaning when Maddie made some poor decisions but man the stakes felt high in this one. Racing against the clock before it's too late...

    Tense, funny and brilliant.
