How many of us have judged someone based on the way they look or solely by the first impression we have of our initial encounter with them? How many more have taken the time to really get to know someone who we may not have initially liked or thought to be nothing more than a nuisance and learned what their story was? I confess, when I first met Lennie Jennings, the female main character in author Riann C. Miller's standalone contemporary romance, Meeting the Unpredictable, I wasn't a fan. Lennie seemed impulsive and made a point of invading someone's personal space. I like having a plan, knowing when something's planned in advance, and I sure as hell don't like people, especially those I don't know, feeling all chummy. Obviously, I related more to Tyler Brooker, the male main character, than I did to Lennie, and just like Tyler, Lennie grew on me. She had a story to tell, and while the secret she was keeping from him--and the readers--can be guessed with the veiled hints and clues in the story, learning her story and that of Tyler's, as well as their respective somewhat dysfunctional families, was one highly worthwhile endeavor.

Twenty-eight-year-old Tyler Brooker likes to stick to his routines, living the life that he's created for himself over the past six years. It may seem boring to some but prefers having schedules and structure, the predictability giving him a comfort of sorts. Then he gets a knock on his door and ends up meeting the poster girl for unpredictability--Lennie Jennings. She's a whirlwind who doesn't seem to take into consideration if she's invading Tyler's time, space, and privacy, taking a bit of his sensibility with the things she says and does that don't seem to make much sense...until you get to know her and realize that she's been making sense all along. Lennie is the twenty-five-year-old sister of Tyler's neighbor and is as opposite as one can get from the type of person he is. She's the chaos to his complacency, never seeming to be able to sit still for longer than she deems necessary. There's a reason why Lennie has been on the move ever since she was eighteen and why she distances herself from her family and hesitates to form lasting relationships, but with Tyler, she's tempted to spend time with the guy next door for however long it lasts.

I figured out what was going on with Lennie early on, but I still found myself on tenterhooks, wondering how everything would play out and if this book would end with a happily-ever-after for both Lennie and Tyler or not. If Lennie were someone I had actually met in real life, I would have probably been wary of her since I prefer the calm over the crazy, but Lennie and her story are a reminder to not judge someone because we have no clue what burdens they carry and what it is they've been through. The same goes for Tyler, who has been through his own trying times. They may not seem like they have anything in common, but they actually do, especially when it comes to their families. Their relationships are damaged and they're the very reason behind both of them making the changes that they did when they did. My heart broke for both Lennie and Tyler, as it did for their families, because the bottom line was they were all missing out by not being fully present in one another's lives. Meeting the Unpredictable stirred a lot of emotions on my end--some good, other not quite--but I love a book that makes me feel and think and that's just one of the reasons why I'm giving this five-plus stars and is on my list of top 2016 favorite reads. ♥

It's honestly impossible for me to not love any of this author's work. She is such an incredible author, I can't understand how she's not on every book shelf in every home and store in the world! I would read her grocery list if she sent it to me...I'd probably even shop for her!

As much as I just want to tell you everything about this book because I loved every word of it, I can't, because you have to read it for yourself. This is the story of Tyler and Lennie. Tyler works at home and pretty much keeps to himself almost every minute of the day. If not for his roommate, Chad he'd never see the outside world at all. The minute he meets Lennie, he is forced to face the outside the world. She is the total opposite of him. She has seen the world and enjoys experiencing everything it has to offer.

Their connection is undeniable but is it enough? All is not as simple as it seems, each are hiding secrets of their past. You'll just have to read the book to find out exactly what those secrets are that being hidden. Trust me, you won't be sorry you bought a copy of this book, it's just that good!

"I’ve mastered the art of hiding in plain sight. Spotting someone else doing the same thing is easy. I might not be in Dallas for long, but I plan to be here long enough to help my new friend figure out how to have fun."

When Lennie knocked on his door and asked to borrow some cooking oil, Tyler had absolutely no idea his life was about to take a 180 degree turn. On the surface, these two couldn’t be more different.

Tyler’s completely steady, a little staid and most definitely stuck in a rut. Sure, his life is boring and predictable and that’s just the way he likes it. For the most part.

Lennie, on the other hand, has chosen a completely different approach. Life’s too short to deal with boring and to not spend it doing exactly what you like.

“The way we express ourselves couldn’t be more different.” He swallows as he watches me closely. “But we’re both suffering right out in the open for anyone to see, but they . . . don’t.” He casts me a meaningful look. “With people like us, you have to dig below the surface to see what’s wrong.”

Both Tyler and Lennie have experienced painful events in their past that have caused them to build emotional walls and both have chosen to build those walls in completely different ways. Tyler would be happy working from home and generally keeping to himself until Lennie. To quote one of the great philosophers of recent history, homegirl came in like a wrecking ball and upended his comfortable existence in the very best way.

Meeting the Unpredictable took me by surprise and completely captivated me from the beginning. Female characters like Lennie don’t come along very often and, to be honest, she could’ve easily worked my last good nerve. Instead of annoyed, I found myself enchanted with her outlook on life, despite the fact it’s obvious she’s had some serious pain in her life. As a reader, I knew her happy, go lucky self was a façade built from many years of practice and that made me want to dig deeper and get to the bottom of her situation. Tyler’s exasperation yet fascination with his newfound situation was seriously delightful.

I’m a blunt woman by nature so let me just say, I highlighted the hell out of this book. Seriously. That kind of goodness makes for some awesome reading. The story brought ALL the feels. It sucked me in with a fun Lennie and a hilariously reluctant Tyler but as the story progressed, my attention was focused on getting to know the characters beyond the surface stuff. And Ms. Miller did not disappoint. It’s rare a book can make me cry real, actual tears and leaves me smiling at the same time. My only complaint is the pacing at the end of the story, but overall it didn’t detract from my enjoyment.

Meeting the Unpredictable was the book I needed at exactly the right time. Lennie plus Tyler mixed with all that good stuff worked for me in a big way.

A big Thank You to Riann C. Miller for my ARC

Lennie is seriously the best heroine I’ve encountered in a book! I just loved her. She’s so sassy but with just the right amount of vulnerability. She tells it like it is. I loved what she said to Tyler’s family! I was saying GO GIRL 😄! Tyler was an awesome character as well. It was refreshing that he didn’t sleep around. He was sweet and loving. I definitely recommend this book. Can’t wait to read more from the author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing read - sensitively written!

A beautiful and sensitively written story about two people trying to overcome life's struggles. A real rollercoaster of emotions, there were times when I was desperate to know more of the story but also scared of where it was heading - my stomach was in turmoil and my heart was breaking. I loved the humour and how Lennie more or less forced herself into Tyler's life like a whirlwind, with absolutely no apology! Loved it - I can't wait to find out what else this author has in store!
