About the Author
Chapter One
Bethany Beulah BeBe
Davis rarely left the COBRA Securities compound, where she worked as the office manager. Everything she needed to survive was located within the fortified perimeter. She was happy there. More than. Now that Trent Tank
Hale was around, the days were sunnier, the air fresher, and life was thrilling in a way it hadn’t been in a long time.
Six-foot-five with shoulders a mile wide and muscles on top of muscles, he was incredible. His short coal-black hair stood up adorably on top of his head, and she melted at a look from his whiskey brown eyes. The color of his skin reminded her of the richest caramel. Originally from Hawaii, she could picture him in an outrigger canoe, his powerful arms manipulating the paddle like a master as he effortlessly stroked through the water. Or maybe performing a Kane Hula kahiko, the ancient Hawaiian male hula dance she’d seen on television once. The movements were strong and sensual.
Feeling a blush creep up her cheeks, she glanced around to make sure no one was around. Thankfully, the hallway was empty as she entered the elevator.
Though she didn’t like to leave, she had the means, thanks to her incredible bosses. Logan Bradley and Luke Colton surprised her one day with her very own Cadillac Escalade they had converted to wheelchair accessible with a driver’s side ramp and hand controls. She’d been floored. She never thought she’d be able to drive again. She’d relied on public transportation or the kindness of friends, but now she had complete freedom to go where she wanted, whenever she wanted. It was a dream she never thought possible.
BeBe even owned her own home inside the complex, an accomplishment she was extremely proud of achieving. It was everything she’d ever wanted, though, in her younger days, she never would’ve considered her house would need to include ramps, handrails, and wide hallways. It was one level, but she had a basement, accessible by an elevator that allowed her to utilize the patio beneath her deck.
She would be the first to admit life was tough when you were confined to a wheelchair. An athlete her entire life, she thrived on competition. Then one late summer day, her world tipped on its axis. What should’ve been a regular day of training on her bike, hoping to make the United States Olympic team turned tragic. A car careened around the bend and slammed into her, throwing her several feet in the air. The vehicle that struck her never stopped. The force of the impact fractured her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.
BeBe remembered little of the days that followed, except for waking up in a hospital bed and hearing the news that she’d never walk again. She admitted to dark days after the accident, where she seriously considered ending her life. Active from the time she could walk, the thought of being confined to a chair for eternity was almost unbearable. Her family and friends rallied around her to provide moral support, and she put on a brave face for them. But when she was alone, the tears flowed.
It’d never been her nature to wallow in self-pity, and after giving herself enough time to grieve for her old life, she’d pulled herself up, finished school to earn her degree, and sought her next big adventure. And boy, did she find it, thanks to Maggie Addison, now McQueen. Maggie saw something in BeBe that she didn’t. She gave her the opportunity to run the COBRA Securities office, and it was the dream job she never knew she wanted. BeBe loved going to work each day. The people were incredible, the job challenging, and she had complete control. She’d be forever grateful to Maggie for giving her a chance.
Her position had grown so much as the company expanded and thrived. She now had a staff of her own. She was a boss! It was a heady feeling
