Do you love genealogy? If so, then this story is for you. I am the grand-daughter of a Belgian immigrant who came to America in 1910 and this book describes my efforts to find and reunite with my Grandfather’s family in Belgium after a breakdown in communication for twenty-five years. The quest for my Belgian relatives began in earnest in 1974 when my grandfather died and my mother found some letters from his family in Belgium. My mother carried on a brief correspondence with the wife of her first cousin in Belgium until the letters stopped coming. In 1983, I wrote to my mother’s Belgian pen-pal saying that my husband and I would be coming to Brussels and hoped to meet the family. The letter was never answered. Finally, in 1998, I took advantage of the genealogist’s new best friends: the internet and email. And--Eureka! I found four Belgian relatives right away and they wanted to see me as much as I wanted to see them. When I made a pilgrimage to meet my relatives in the old world, they pulled out all the stops and treated my husband and me like movie stars for a family reunion like no other.

Part I: My Mom’s Family
In 1910, my grandfather, Alphonse Salaets, and his brother, Victor, both in their twenties, boarded the Red Star Line in Antwerp en route to Ellis Island, New York. It was their dream to immigrate to the United States. Before they left, they had formal portraits taken in a professional studio. They both wore their Sunday best.
