    The stew had simmered all afternoon, and its aroma filled the hut. Ellen sniffed happily as she sliced a loaf that hadn’t sold at today’s market.

    She’d given away other unsold loaves to her friends and to street urchins rather than carry everything back to her hut. The bread would only turn stale.

    Butter on the table, watered ale in a mug, she gave one last stir to the stew before she fetched a bowl from the top shelf over her workboard.

    A sharp knock rapped on her door.

    Who could be visiting so late? Even with the shortened days, the night was well advanced. Most would be retired for the night. Ellen’s late start on supper had pushed back her one meal of the day.

    She’d taken over the hut after Melly disappeared. Located beyond Nottingham’s walls, it was tucked against Sherwood Forest. Seeing light through the ill-fitted shutters, did someone hope the healer had returned? Or had a guard decided to investigate? Melly fled into the forest when accused of poison. Two guards pursued her. None of them returned. Could it be—?

    The knock repeated, insistent.

    Ellen set down the bowl and picked up her butcher knife. When she opened the door, no one stood without. Then, by the withy gate, she saw movement. She clutched the knife more tightly.

    A man approached. Darkness slipped off him, as if shadows slithered away. Pale, pale skin. A shimmering cascade of silver hair. Sharp features. The sword at his hip glinted
