About the Author
Introduction
Essential: absolutely necessary; extremely important. That’s a fairly common definition and one of the few words I use to guide my life and my business. You don’t need to know everything. You don’t need to learn everything. In fact, you only need to learn what you don’t know right now.
The spirit of essentialism is what this guide is all about. It’s not a bloated hardcover with colorful charts and graphs. I want to share with you only the essential elements of getting your book to market.
Welcome to How to Self-Publish: The Essential Guide for Taking Your Idea to Market for planning, drafting, launching, and marketing your book. I will provide you with short, concise advice on how you can take your story idea to market.
I’ll end each section with an actionable task, something you can immediately, as well as a question that will prompt you to begin thinking about the next step in the process.
This is a system I’ve developed since 2009 as an independent publisher, but the tactics and strategies I’ve implemented have come from decades of experience as both an educator and a project manager.
I had a long academic career before becoming a full-time author. Beginning in 1992, I earned a BA in History and then earned an MA in Education. I spent 25 years as an educator. I taught kindergartners how to read and graduate students how to write. My time spent as both a teacher and an administrator taught me how to manage projects and time. And now, I’m going to share that knowledge with you—and it won’t take you 25 years to master it, I promise.
You should use whatever tips and tricks work for you and feel free to discard the ones that don’t.
There is a tsunami of information online about ways to write, draft, launch, and market your book, but it’s not all reliable or battle-tested.
As you move through this guide, feel free to email me a question (jthorn.writer@gmail.com). I do not have an email handler. I do not have a virtual assistant running my email account. Any message or reply that you receive from this email account is coming directly from me.
I can’t wait to get you off the starting blocks and over the hump in getting your book to market. In the next section, we’re going to begin. Get ready!
Preparation
Whether you consider yourself a plotter or pantser, you will need to prepare before you begin writing your manuscript.
It is unreasonable to believe that you could get into a car and start driving on random roads and somehow end up
