      The Old Friend

      Merry pulled up in front of a large ranch-style home whose path wound towards a wide, teal blue front door framed by beautiful white wrought ironwork. Tall shade trees sheltered the house from the now blazing afternoon sun.

      She felt just a little nervous. Although she and Barb had been closer than sisters in their university days, those days were in the long distant past. Would they be able to pick up where they left off? What would they talk about? Had she made a mistake agreeing to stay for a week?

      Gathering her purse and some flowers she had bought for Barb on the way in to Glenview, she opened the front gate. Before she had gone three steps, the door was flung open, and there stood Barb. Of middle height and just a little plump, Barb's crowning glory had always been her thick, dark red hair, and it still lay shining and heavy on her shoulders.

      In seconds she flew down the path, arms wide open and a grin splitting her face.

      Meredith! I've been hanging around the door for hours like a teenager with a first date!

      Before she had a chance to reply, Merry was pulled into Barb's warm hug and the two women clung to each other, laughing with pleasure.

      I've so looked forward to seeing you, Barb, said Merry with a huge smile. And you look fantastic! I'd have known you anywhere.

      Likewise, Meredith! I see you still have the girlish figure I always envied! she laughed.

      Arms around one another's shoulders, the two old friends walked up to the house and through the big front door. The cool of the air conditioned hallway welcomed them, and although it was clearly a luxurious home it was in no way intimidating.

      Unless things have changed, Meredith, I suspect you'll be wanting a cup of coffee before anything else, Barb called on her way to the kitchen to switch on the machine. Merry laughed.

      Oh dear, you remember my coffee addiction, said Merry. Well that certainly hasn't changed over the years and I'd love one now.

      Are you tired? asked Barb. If you feel like lying down for a bit to catch your breath, just say so. I don't mind.

      No, I'm not tired at all, Barb, replied Merry truthfully. I got on the road early this morning to get a good start. I ate some fruit and cheese in the car for lunch. So I'm much more interested in catching up on your life than in napping right now.

      OK, let's get your stuff from your car while the coffee's brewing.
