This book, however, has found the perfect balance between the two. The story, character development, and romance were all engaging, pushing the reader to continue flipping through the pages. It’s a super world rich fantasy realm, and it’s wonderfully explored. The romance is slow burn and there’s a lot of effort made by characters towards self growth and becoming good balances for each other. The spice was 10/10!!! Will definitely reread!

I love the world building in this series to begin with, and the characters are always so very well fleshed out. Varis is absolutely my favorite mmc from the series this far and that's saying something because I LOVE Dain, and Bells is strong, smart, and self contained without coming off wooden. I adore this series and ESPECIALLY adore this book. I wish I had more stars to give.

I really wanted to enjoy this book, but I just couldn't really get into it. I felt like the world building was immense, but not enough time was spent on explaining some of the aspects of what was happening. Upon further investigation, it appears that this is an installment within a standalone series, which is fine. However, I feel that if its marketed as a standalone, there should be some explanation to the world and politics, rather than just assuming that all readers have a deep understanding of the lore and world.

World building aside, I felt like this was a loose retelling of Beauty and the Beast that just missed the mark a bit for me. The FMC too quickly backpedaled on her previous convictions to be taken seriously, and the almost 'instalove' that she and the Duke had was not my cup of tea. There were some good 'secrets' that were revealed throughout the book, but that was really the only thing that I found to be engaging or helping me to continue reading.

So I read this book first without reading any other of the author's writings. I was a bit lost to begin with as there are two other books before. I didn't get the lore of the books initially...that all being said this book is FANTASTIC I couldn't put it down. For me the slow burn of the characters is amazing!
I loved this book so much I read the others in the series just so I knew more of what was happening, and then read this again and still loved it like the first time!
I'm off to read the other one that's just come out!
