Mattie settled into the passenger seat, admiring Merry's little red Mini Cooper. I need good cushioning these days for my boney old butt!
she laughed.
Do you get down to St. Louis often?
Merry asked, as they pulled onto The Mother Road once again.
I wouldn't say often, but I try to go every once in a while. It's a great town with lots to do.
Her wrinkled face broke into a slow grin. I once had a wild affair with an artist down there. That's when I was young of course. My, those were the days!
and she shook her head slowly, remembering. Merry smiled as they drove in companionable silence for a while.
Route 66 continued to offer up fascinating insights into history, with its fifties style roadside diners and gas stations. Although she was generally happy with her own company, Merry enjoyed having someone to share these sights, and she and Mattie laughed a lot along the way.
It'd be nice to stop a while at Devil's Elbow,
said Mattie. We're in Ozark country here, Merry, and I think Devil's Elbow is one of the neatest little places on The Mother Road.
