Cry For Help: An addictive and gripping mystery and suspense novel (Detective Madison Harper Book 2) Kindle Edition
When teenager Nikki Jackson’s body is found at an amusement park, just hours after Fourth of July fireworks lit up the night sky, the Lost Creek police rule her death as suicide—a devastating final act from a girl who had lost all hope. But the absence of the knife used to make the wounds on her delicate wrists makes Detective Madison Harper think otherwise. And the partial fingerprint found on the girl’s face proves her right. Someone else was with Nikki in her final moments…
Back home in Colorado for the first time in seven years to investigate the murder of a woman with ties to the son she lost to the care system, the pressure is on for Madison to work both cases at once. Fearing the team has missed a vital clue, Madison searches the crime scene alone and finds the last thing she ever expected: a note proving the victims knew each other, and that the cases are linked. Is this a coincidence, proof a dangerous murderer is on the loose, or a trap set to lead Madison off the trail?
It’s only when Madison finally finds the knife used to harm Nikki, tucked in an almost impossible to find hiding place, that she knows she is closing-in on a twisted killer. But the last person she expects to see dragged into the department in handcuffs is her own missing son…
An absolutely unputdownable crime thriller that will have you sleeping with the lights on. Addictive reading for anyone who loves Lisa Regan, Robert Dugoni and Melinda Leigh.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2024At first, I was not sure about Wendy Dranfield's Dectective Madison Harper series. I read fiction for escape, and Wendy's work, while ending happily, tends to expose the worst of humanity. From page one to the very last sentence, she buries the reader in social issues, such as corrupt cops, wrongful arrests, and nasty small-town politics. One review described Wendy Dranfield's Dectective Madison Harper series as a " gripping, suspenseful, mystery thriller." I agree that it is thrilling, with an extremely edge-of-the-seat suspense vibe. This is not the cozy mystery you curl up to with a cup of tea and a fire blazing in the fireplace. And while it did take me away to an alternate reality, it was not a smooth, gentle ride! Wendy Dranfield's talented people prose has more twists and turns than a steep mountain rode in the dark of night! After reading book one, Shadow Falls, it took several minutes for my heart rate to return to normal! While the mystery was solved, and the immediate bad guys were taken care of; it left me feeling uneasy as I waited for the other shoe to drop. I wasn't sure I liked the book. Yet, I don't write negative reviews. Instead, since the series was on Kindle Unlimited, meaning no extra charges, I decided to give book two, Cry For Help, a chance to bedazzle me! I am glad I didn't give up!
Wendy's two main characters, Madison and Nate Monroe, are two strong Alpha personalities, hardened by prison sentences for crimes they didn't commit. Nate's experience with the system has hardened him, causing him to distrust everyone but especially law enforcement. Madison, on the other hand, has a conflicted approach to the system. She wants to believe that not all cops are crooked; she is not sure who she can trust. Nate and Madison's relationship is precarious, but both soon realize they need each other. Madison and Nate are the perfect flawed heroes, rough around the edges, but soul-deep they care about the vulnerable people around them. Wendy's character development brings these two unlikely partners to life. They are so relatable and believable that you are sucked into the pages, completely absorbed in their adventures as though they are real.
The action and suspense are non-stop. Before you can even fasten your seat-belt, Maddie and Nate are off. All you can do is hang on and hope you don't get caught in the crossfire. And you can bet there will be gunfire! Because Wendy Dranfield's unlikely dynamic duo attracts trouble like magnets! There are so many twists in this plot that I never saw the ending coming. ( OK, so I might have closed my eyes and clutched my make-believe Jesus strap on the car for some of the scenes! They seemed so real!)
In the end, my heart rate slowed as the mystery was resolved. I was still left with that uneasy feeling in my stomach because though the main conflict was resolved, there were a lot of answered questions. Happy ending is true. However, I am not certain it will be forever. Which, for me , an escape reader, is unsettling. However, it works as a way to keep me hooked to the series for some time!
So, while my feelings seem somewhat mixed about this series, I think I am intrigued by the story enough to keep reading. I can't beat the price as my Kindle Unlimited subscription makes ordering book three virtually painless!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2024Detective Madison Harper is wrongly convicted of murdering her partner, losing everything including her 10 year old son. Six years later she return to town! A well written, fast paced, edge of your seat thriller! The characters are complex! Abuse, neglect, drug addiction and trafficking, physical, emotion and sexual abuse, corruption, jealousy and revenge reveal regret, self loathing and eventually the truth!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2024I could not put this book down. Heart stopping suspense. A twist at every page!
Absolutely devoured this book whole.
If you love Madison Harper’s mystery & suspense around every turn of her world, you will love this one!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2024Cry For Help (Detective Madison Harper Book 2) by Wendy Dranfield is a well written mystery story. But, it left me a little “cold” until the very end when the plot twists come together and the killers are revealed.
Our heroine Madison Harper, who is recently released from prison for a murder she said she did not commit, goes back to her hometown the clear her name and find her son. What follows is a series of confrontations between Madison and her friend/employer, and her sister and her sister’s husband, and the officers in the police department when she used to work. In fact, the entire first section is nothing but one acrimonious conflict after another. The anger, bitterness and emotional baggage between characters was palpable and distracting, in my opinion, from the story itself. Later, as the events and history between the characters became clearer things became less caustic.
I did not find Madison very likable. To me she seemed to be drowning in her own self-pity yet overbearing and arrogant to the point of believing she could make every see that she was falsely imprisoned for a murder she did not commit. She seemed to be resentful of everyone, even her employer Nate Monroe who was trying to help her. All the other characters were so despicable there was no one the reader could associate with except for Nate and Brody, the dog.
The author is methodical in laying out the facts with the truth and secrets closely guarded until the very end. In the end, Cry for Help is an interesting story but not the addictive and gripping mystery and suspense novel it was advertised to be.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024This had me right away, the story, the characters the way it ended. Wanted to keep reading to find out what’s next
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2024What a lot of twists and turns in this one I enjoyed all of the characters and then I even hated one that in the end I didn't hate so much. But all the horrible twists and turns that happened are really a great testimony to what a great author Wendy is. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting!
I really enjoyed this book. Rather than just one storyline there are several woven together, with little clues spread liberally throughout the narrative. The author writes well with a gift for writing prose that has been sadly lacking in many of the other books I've read so far this year. Her talent will no doubt take her far. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well written police procedural.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping!
This is the second installment of the Madison and Nate series. I love their interaction, I was eager to know what was coming after the first book and I am now definitely hooked! I love the whole series! Everything is well described and the intensity is really there. Don't go elsewhere, you will find here an amazing series to occupy your evenings!

Wonderful not to have to wait till book x to get the answers to the questions in book 1. I am eagerly looking forward to book 3 and new developments for Madison, Bate and Owen.
