Filled with frustration dealing with one incident after another, Ryland finally finds his way around it. He keeps a blue bandana folded in his back pocket; the bandana holds the unwritten code of simple virtues his cowboy hero, Rusty Wonder lives by. When Ryland meets his hero, it becomes the first step in finding the courage he needs to stand up to Moss, but his greatest accomplishment happens when he gives away what he thinks is his good luck to another young boy who Ryland thinks needs it more than he does.

    CHAPTER 1

RYLAND SAT UP AND RUBBED his eyes. He nudged the big gray lump of dog at the foot of his bed. Come on, Squeak, time to get up. It’s summer vacation!

Squeak was Ryland Duze’s second to best friend, and the biggest Great Dane in all of Willowood County, at least according to Ryland. Squeak was so big that Ryland could have saddled and ridden him like a horse if he wanted. But, maybe Squeak seemed so big because Ryland was so small. He was the shortest kid in both third grade classes at Pyle Elementary School.

"First day of summer vacation means we gotta get down to the pond and get some fishing in, Squeak. I’m not gonna let Moss win the fishing contest again. This year, Im gonna win it. I’m winning the new fishing pole, and I’m buying a new belt buckle with the prize money."

The good thing about a rain-sprinkling summer day is it’s a perfect day for fishing.

Squeak stretched one leg at a time as his huge body slowly slinked off Ryland’s bed. He wandered over to the door, and with his tail wagging like a windshield wiper, he waited patiently for Ryland to open it.

After putting on a pair of blue jeans and his favorite red t-shirt, Ryland picked up two socks off the floor. He scrunched them up to his nose, took a long deep sniff of each one, decided they were clean enough, then put them on. He pulled his cowboy boots on, grabbed his baseball cap and a rain jacket, and started for the door. He swung back around, leaned over and reached for the blue bandana from his dresser-his Official Rusty Wonder Bandana that he had ordered. Ryland carefully folded and tucked the bandana into his back pocket.

Now we’re ready, Squeak. Ryland opened his bedroom door and quiet as a mouse, headed down the
