Playing Fae Games (Magical Artifacts Institute Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 318 ratings

Dangerous Fae. Dangerous games.

Just when I thought I had achieved my life-long dream of becoming an Artifact Hunter for the Institute, Aidan goes missing before signing off on the paperwork.

What’s a girl to do in these circumstances but track him down?

Unfortunately, Aidan’s trail leads right into the one place best enjoyed from afar: the otherworld land of Faerie, where Fae Lords rule, help comes at a steep price, and creatures love to gnaw on human parts.

It’s also way out of the Institute’s reach, so any rescue mission is up to me. Sneaking into Faerie might be the most dangerous thing I’ve ever done, but for Aidan—not to mention my dream job—I’m willing to take the risk.

Getting into Fae-land proves to be easy, finding Aidan a bit more tricky. Surviving the trip and making it out? Well, that’s going to depend on how many Fae tricks we can avoid…and how good I am at playing their games.

Playing Fae Games is the second book in the Magical Artifacts Institute series—a fun, fast-paced Urban Fantasy series featuring tricky magic, adventure, and an opposites-attract slow burn romance.

The old stories about the Fae, promises with them, and the bargains we make with them are most likely true. Never promise anything you cannot do without. The characters are fascinating, the full Fae, the monsters, and the artifacts. The plot is easily followed, and the premise is finding very dangerous artifacts and storing them in a place no one can find or use them. I definitely recommend this book.

The main character certainly has a gift for getting into trouble. At least she means well. I look forward to reading about further misadventures.

Irrepressible. That's my current favorite word for Maddie. She's just so, so, full of life. Effervescent. She's also well-versed in artifacts and being wary of Fae traps and the cost of getting caught up in their magic and games... But at the same time she's wildly impetuous; her attempts to rationalize how she's totally responsible even while she's actively plotting wildly irresponsible things were delightful, as was the spontaneity of her narrative voice - she's unapologetically flying by the seat of her pants here, instead of sitting down and making a solid plan before acting (as Aiden would do, Mr. "Plans are things you think through"), and because she's Maddie it just works. Victor sums up Maddie's wild leaps in logic well: "Your brain takes strange paths," as he put it. But it's her out-of-the-box thinking that makes her a great artifact hunter (albeit simultaneously a hazard to her own health and Aiden's sanity).

And when she meets back up with Aiden, the sparks flying from their personalities rubbing up against each other were just hilarious. This is not a book to read silently on your phone while you're putting the baby to bed, FYI; you *will* laugh too hard and wake the baby. Oh, they're so much fun together! She's very adamant that she's trying to help Aiden because they made a good team, because she enjoyed sharing the adventure with him, nothing more... pretty clearly in the denial phase of liking him, and it'll be interesting to see how that develops.

So if I haven't made it clear yet, I loved this book! Playing Fae Games was a fabulous follow-up to Finding Fae Artifacts, and pulls us deeper into the world of the fae and part-fae. The *details* here are amazing: traveling by ley lines with Greenie is a visceral experience, and the environment shock of entering Faerie! You can absolutely picture what Maddie's seeing, and thanks to her unique way of describing things, some of it is pretty darn hilarious. "Eldritch tree chandelier" 🤣

But, yikes... We (and Maddie) still have no idea what kind of price is exacted for using Greenie - - though there was a faint and as-yet unhelpful hint - - let alone the other artifacts she decided to use this time around... Something tells me she's about to encounter some kind of consequence. And I can't wait.

I received an ARC copy of Playing Fae Games, but enjoyed it so much that I purchased a copy as soon as it released!

Madrid is awesome, innocent but determined to get what she wants, A job at the Institute. Sudan has been missing for a week and she's going to find him since he left before he signed her employment papers. She does he must be in faeland because the Institute wouldn't have looked there. So she finds a way in but will she find him and be able to get home again? Great story

So, playing fae games. Great part of a story. If it was a whole book I'd give it 5 stars. I really dislike this thing some authors are doing where they break one book into 5 mini stories and then sell them as individual books. I suppose the lower price tag is meant to be the trade off, but this was way too short.
If the author condenses this "series" into one book or collection with a reasonable price, I would love to finish it. As it stands I'm not paying 3 dollars a short story.

The world the author created really is a fresh take on magic/magic users and magical artifacts. It all comes together in a clever story populated with a fantastic cast of characters and in this book we're meeting the newbies and experiencing the developing relationships between the rest. The author balances dark with light, keeping tension at just the right level, humor is applied with a light, expert touch and banter is spot on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of wholesome adventure, treasure hunting, exotic monsters, and dripping with good humour.

I am quickly becoming a big fan of Isa Medina’s Magical Artififacts Institute series of novellas!

The sequel carries off where the first left as main character Maddie arrives on the first day of her new job at the institute, only to discover that its owner and grumpy love interest Aidan has mysteriously disappeared into the land of Faerie. If Maddie stands any chance of starting her dream job as an artifact hunter, then she’ll need to risk life and limb by entering the treacherous world of the Fae on a rescue mission. And maybe she’ll snag a few artifacts on the way, eh?

We don’t get to spend too much time in Faerie as Maddie is trapped inside a rather creepy Fae mansion, thus I’d love to learn more about the Fae and their culture and society which is briefly touched upon here.

I absolutely love the sense of adventure in these novellas which carries on in the sequel. These are short and sweet cheerful feel-good stories, though don’t let me fool you; there’s thrilling action and monster battles as well. I especially like that it’s Maddie who is attempting to rescue the love interest, and the banter between the two is great fun. Maddie herself is an incredibly optimistic if not ditzy main character, and her voice comes through brilliantly. She’s the kind of trouble you want to run into.

Reading these books honestly reminds me of The Mummy films; full of wholesome adventure, treasure hunting, exotic monsters, and dripping with good humour. I can’t wait to see what trouble Maddie finds herself in next.

5.0 out of 5 stars The fun continues

I have just finished this delightful series. Each book is novella length so I read the whole series in a couple of days!

Meet Maddie, she dreams of being a Fae Artefact hunter and working for the luminous Institute. Despite multiple applications, Maddie keeps getting knocked back. She's young, determined and a bit sneaky. This book continues were the last one left off, only Aidan has gone missing. Clearly it's up to cheeky Maddie to track him down...

This is a fast paced laugh out loud series. Maddies occasionally makes bad choices but never crosses that irritating threshold of Too Stupid Too Live. She's so exuberant and her enthusiasm is infectious. There's a wonderful slow burn romance and I was shipping so hard 🤣 Spice level is low, with only two on screen kisses the whole time.

Side note, Maddie has a hell hound. I adore animal sidekicks so I was all in.

Give this little known series a try! You'll enjoy the witty dialogue and you'll be giggling at Maddie's antics in no time.

I loved it. It was exactly the kind of lighthearted adventure I needed.
If you’re looking for break, this book is a good shout. I know it left me feeling happier and craving more.
I’ll be diving straight into the next book tomorrow.
