- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2019This is such a fun series. I loved the chemistry between Mel, Terri and Pru. Plus, Owen was so perfect. I'm hoping Pru gets a story.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2019Yall this book. I couldn’t stop laughing. It’s a mystery, its a second chance romance, its amateur women sleuths but underneath all of it is a great story that I couldn’t put down. I have never read anything by Ms. Haggerty but I quickly bought Terri’s book and I can’t wait for Pru’s. That said, let me tell you about the awesomeness of this book and why I highly recommend it to everyone.
Mel – She is funny, loyal, honest and I loved the fact that she did have something wrong with her and felt like nobody would love her for it. Cue…Owen. I didn’t read Terri’s book so I’m basing her solely on this one. I loved her. I wish my school counselor could have been as cool as her.
Owen – Mel’s boyfriend/cop – Talk about not letting Mel get away with anything. He fought for her, stood by her and loved her…craziness and all. He could have baled but love does something to a person.
Terri – best friend to Mel and school librarian. OMG! I would NEVER rearrange a library like her. Not using the Dewy Decimal system is sacrilege. But I digress. I could write a lengthy blog post just on how kids don’t understand a library anymore. I liked her because she brought Mel back to earth when she needed it. Loyal, and not wanting to involve her boyfriend Ryder, I could understand. Of course, I bought her book. 🙂
Pru – I loved how she just fit right in with Terri and Mel at school and on the mystery. She brought a lot to the table and I can’t wait for her book next.
The bad guys/girls – I never guessed who it was and I was honestly shocked but I understood the motivation behind it.
The mystery itself – I loved it. It was relevant and I liked how it involved a school. Not a lot of authors use a school as a setting for a book. It was plausible, plus since I work at a school, I could just imagine the places, attitudes, people, etc. that Ms. Haggery was talking about.
Milwaukee – NO ONE ever sets a story in Milwaukee. Loved it, just loved it.
I would be remiss if I didn’t address the romance in the book. It’s there but it is not the main focus of the book. Owen and Mel broke up and they are getting their second chance. Ms. Haggerty wrote it with some humor but also with real depth and the ending was perfect for me. Kisses only.
Ms. Haggerty has got a true sense of humor. I could sit with her and drink a beer or two. Sorry, no wine. Her characters are flawed but realistic. Loyal, smart and don’t sit around to be rescued.
You really need to this book. I devoured it in an afternoon and I already miss it.
*I received this book for my opinion. My opinion is my own and I was not paid for it.*
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2019In Picture Not Perfect, the second book in The Not So Reluctant Detectives Series, author D.E. Haggerty continues to weave a delightful cozy mystery series that follows the amateur investigative adventures of best friends and co-workers Terri, Melanie and Prudence.
Someone is framing Melanie for the murder of her co-worker, creepy high school Social Science teacher Alfred Schultz. The detectives found pictures of Melanie at Alfred's apartment, and they think he was stalking her and that she put a fatal stop to it. Melanie is determined to find the real murderer, so with the help of Terri, Ryder (Terri's private investigator boyfriend), Owen (Melanie's ex-police officer boyfriend), and co-worker Prudence, they embark on a murder investigation adventure that is sure to find the murderer, and prove Melanie's innocence before she finds herself arrested for murder!
Picture Not Perfect is a thoroughly entertaining cozy mystery that will keep the reader in stitches. Set in Milwaukee, the reader follows the humorous trials and tribulations of Melanie, Terri, and Prudence on their latest amateur investigative adventures.
This was such a fun book to read! The reader can't help but get drawn into the quirky trials and tribulations and intriguing suspense that Melanie and friends encounter as they fly by the seat of their pants during their murder investigation. I really enjoyed Melanie's sassy humor and wit, you can't help but feel compassion for her determination to find the real murderer and prove her innocence, and when you add in the hilarious antics that follows these three cheeky chicks and their boyfriends, you get a delightful cozy mystery that will leave you wanting more! And if the murder investigation isn't enough, the reader will enjoy the romantic angst that Melanie and Owen share as they go through the trials and tribulations of their on-again-off-again romantic relationship.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I really loved how the author used clever quotes at the beginning of each chapter.
Cozy mystery fans, I would highly recommend that you read the entertaining The Not So Reluctant Detective Series, you won't regret it!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019What a fun book this was to read! Mel is a complex character who fights with the reader when the reader simply wants to like her. The three-musketeer aspect of this book was very enjoyable. Ter is of course all the Ter she can be but Pru is a breath of fresh air to the two besties. This murder mystery keeps the reader guessing and try as one might, it was hard to pin down who did the crime before it was finally revealed.
What I couldn't stop thinking is how this series of cozy mysteries reminds me of the Mike Hammer mysteries as penned by Mickey Spillane. I honestly believe this author has created the 21st century version of the Mike Hammer mystery! I cannot wait to read Finders not Keepers.
Picture Not Perfect has a great murder mystery, suspense, intrigue, romance and the value of friendship clearly defined. A fantastic read that would be great on a beach, in a cabin, on a rainy weekend or when commuting via public transit. An easy fun read that will appeal to any fan of mystery novels.
