    The handmade sign written in black Sharpie on a yellow, lined index card, duct taped to the back of the taxicab’s scarred black leatherette front seat, read, "Bodily fluids on the car: $10. Bodily fluids in the car: $150."

    The driver must be rich by now, because the back seat stank like six kinds of funk. But Jake Abbot smiled. He was free, and six kinds of funk was three fewer than the nine kinds he had suffered every day while he was locked up in Folsom.
