Scalding Hot Chocolate (Adulting Not Allowed Book 1) Kindle Edition
I’m a woman who adores childish things. I prefer being called Maddie over Madison. I like frilly dresses, and tickle fights, and hot chocolate, and coloring, and swing sets. I avoid adulting like I do broccoli, and my therapist says that’s okay. We all have our hobbies. I think my therapist is full of it, but he hasn’t steered me wrong yet. At least I don’t think he has. So, what am I supposed to do when tragedy hits my family once again and I’m left with twins?
Well, I adapt. If I have anything good going for me, it’s that I’m a river, ever-flowing. Plus, rivers have waterfalls and rainbows. I like waterfalls and rainbows. But now I need to adult fast because having two tiny things relying on me is hard. I have to be—dare I say it—responsible. Ick. I hate that word.
Just when I think I’m getting a routine down with my adorable twins, I’m faced with new problems. My stepmonster is out to get me again. She likes to think she can prove a point, but I’m older now. I won’t let her stomp on me anymore. She better prepare for a fight.
And apparently, I have three men on my side. They’re willing to prove they’ll help me. I’ll believe them the day I finally see the elusive unicorn. But they’re there and I can’t stop blabbering like an idiot long enough to tell them to go away.
Don’t worry. I got this. I think.

About the author

My name is Jaliza Burwell and I'm a writer.
Okay, okay, more information. I love writing about fantastical worlds and the people who live in them. Once in a while, I'll toss in some contemporary to keep things real.
I am a proud auntie of seven: three nieces, three nephews, and one wily cat. I'm also that annoying roommate who doesn't know how to shut up. When I'm not harassing my family or friends, you can find me reading or walking around aimlessly, pretending to contemplate about life.
I hold a B.A. in English Creative Writing with a minor in chemistry, just because I could. I also have a M.A. in Publishing and Writing. With all that in my background, I like to think I know things, when really I don't.
What do I write? Fantasy. All things fantasy! With romance, and men. Lots of men, because why not?

- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2021The humor was awesome, the way she viewed life & even though she had been through a rough childhood she still looked at the world with laughter & smiles. I like the guys, they’re cool, hot, delicious but cool. I cried quite a bit here & there as her story often was sad, but her sense of fun & refusal to act like an adult at times made it hilarious. I love her sense of style & her willingness to look & be different, to be unique, totally looking forward to the next one
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2024This is the second series I’ve read from this author. She didn’t disappoint! I loved the main character. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is bc as much as I loved the MC there were a few times I didn’t. It made it difficult to read and turned me off from the book, but those scenes were short and I kept reading and overall I did really enjoy this book. My issue was (as much as I loved the character) it just got to where she was too childish and I was just like what am I reading. And one of the men characters I’m not really vining with but *shrug*. If you’re debating on this book just read it!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2019This was a great book. Made me tear up and filled me with love. I love Maddie. She’s so very unique. When we grow up we all feel like we have to act a certain way. I love that she’s childish and fun but can be very much the adult. She struggles and try’s her best and she’s amazing. And the twins? Absolutely adorable, you can’t just not fall in love with them little boys. And the men? Yessss please.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2022This was such a cute story! I love all the characters and how they all flow together. I love that we get to know the twins and they are not just there to add to the plot. The growing relationship is cute and heartwarming. I can’t wait to read the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2020This was a really enjoyable read. It wasn't super heavy, but the various conflicts weren't just there to provide a minor challenge to the main character. She has some real stuff to deal with, and it's hard. But she's got it. I like Maddie a lot, and I like the men entering her life. The twins are adorable, and I love that they are characters in their own right and not just plot bunnies. I have pre-ordered book 2, and look forward to seeing what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2020I really didn’t know what to think of this book so I started with a sample but I should have known better because Jaliza her writing took me in right away and I had to buy this book to keep reading.
I first thought that the main character Maddie would be a real child in a grown up body but that wasn’t the case, she just likes different things and has a different way of doing some stuff but I liked that about her. The man I like (off course) but in this book I really fell for Maddie and I can’t wait for the end of March to know how this story continues!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2020This story was amazing. It’s a contemporary RH and the female MC is awesome. She likes to show that just because you’re adult doesn’t mean you can’t have child-like fun. She takes care of her nephews and meets three awesome men along the way. But there are some family issues that rear their ugly head. Can’t wait for the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2020I enjoyed this book. I just finished Jaliza's BioMystic series and realized that I had preordered this one as well. We get to meet Maddie and her twins, their little world in Boston. Life gets complicated, but luckily she meets three guys who want to help her out and keep her and the twins safe.
This book leaves you ready for the next in series! I am looking forward to seeing how things unfold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth reading
This story is amazing with a dose reality. I can personally relate to some of the stuff in this book and that made it all the better for me. I can't wait for the next book and more books after that if I'm lucky.
