    About the Author

    Chapter One

Angelos Dimitriou brought the car to an abrupt stop and jumped out. Cautiously stepping closer to the edge of the cliff, his eyes roamed over the rocks below. He was scanning for something that had caught his attention while driving around a curve. It’s just a garbage bag washed ashore; I’m just wasting my time, he reasoned with himself. But then again, he couldn’t brush off an eerie feeling in his stomach.

What the hell? the words escaped his lips the moment he spotted a mass of blond hair spread over the rock below. He flattened himself on the ground, his head hanging over the edge to get a better look. Yes, his intuition was right. A body was lying on the rocks...a woman with long, blond hair, wearing a white dress.

He gasped and searched the area for some way to get down there. A little farther to his right, he spotted a winding, rough path leading to the beach. Pulling himself away from the edge, he jumped to his feet and pulled out his cell phone.

Stelios picked up on the first ring. In a few words, Angelos told his cousin, Stelios Dimitriou—Chief of Police on the Greek Island of Naxos—where he was and what had happened. As soon as he ended the call and placed his cell phone in his pocket, he went searching for the path he’d spotted from the edge of the cliff.

A few minutes later, all sweaty and scratched up, he kneeled down next to the body. Grabbing the limp hand hanging on the side of the rock, Angelos was thrilled to feel a pulse. Thank God, she’s alive. He glanced up the steep rock. If she’d fallen from up there, how on earth is she still alive?

The body was lying face down on the rock. Angelos moved closer to the head and gently removed a tangled mass of blond hair from her face. His breath caught in his throat to see her face covered in blood. I hope the paramedics get here soon, he thought, sure that his cousin must have already called them.

Taking off his T-shirt, he soaked it in the water and gently washed her face. He breathed a sigh of relief; except some scratches and bruises, there didn’t seem to be any serious damage to it. His eyes roamed over the slender figure. Her soaking wet, white dress clung to her body like second skin. He was not a doctor, but he could tell that her arms and legs didn’t seem broken. Scratching his head, he glanced up the cliff again. It’s highly unlikely that she fell from up there; she would be dead by now. Then, he looked towards the sea. The small cove was deserted. Did she get here by boat? But if she did, where is it?

Angelos was puzzled by all this, not to mention that the girl seemed too young to have reached this remote area on her own. She didn’t look older than sixteen, maybe seventeen years
