- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2019But a little piece of fluff it is. Their realizations of lust and desire and love are each sudden. Suddenly declared. The story itself is rather fun despite the silliness, and I quite enjoyed it.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2018Lady Helena is a bright, forward thinking young lady. She knows she must provide for her future until she comes into her inheritance. She enjoys writing and figures out a way to write scandals that will earn her some money. She has had a crush on Lord Oliver Hunt, a friend of her brother's, for quite some time.
Lord Oliver Hunt is the usual, arrogant, non-thinking-except-with-his man-bits, handsome duke. He's actually kind of dorky but you don't really see that until later in the book. Due to his friendship with Lady Helena's brother, Darcy, they have known each other a long time.
Lord Oliver does Lady Helena a disservice at a ball when she is young so she decides to retaliate and put him in her scandal sheet. Time goes by and they both grow and realize what they mean to each other. Their banter is fun and shows a connection.
The plot is cute and it has a few twists and turns.
However, It was just a quite thin and several things weren't explained very well. For example, in Chapter Two, Darcy all the sudden is angry with Lord Oliver. Why?? In Chapter Four, her aloof and hateful mother sends her to Scotland and says "It'll be fun". What?? Why does she care about Helena having fun?? When Lord Oliver realizes his feelings, it is LITERALLY in the space of ONE SECOND. Really?? From "I don't like her" to "I love her madly and will give EVERYTHING up for her"?? A Lady Anna was brought in for meanness and spitefulness, but then nothing was done with her. And a more in-depth explanation of why she felt her parents didn't care for her would have added some meat to the book.
There were also quite a few modern words and phrases. Nothing too awful but idiosyncratic for the time period. Sometimes I can't tell if the author wants to write that way or if she/he just doesn't know the proper verbiage of the time period.
All in all not a bad read. A nice way to spend 45 minutes or so.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2019This was part of a 9 author bundle I purchased called WHEN A ROGUE FALLS. I would encourage you to buy this bundle which as of now is $.99. You will pay $3.99 for just this novella. Even though I like this author, this novella is priced high for what you are getting in the story.
A clean story - I've read similar story lines, but it was still enjoyable. Our h isn't loved by her parents, especially her father, and the reason, other than her being female is at a loss. The brother was protective at times and stated he didn't want his best friend around his sister. We never hear about the brother after this declaration, even at the wedding.
This is a novella, moves quickly, no cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA and no epilogue. The character's were likable.
I can't improve on the blurb, so not attempting, just what you may get out of reading it. (ljb)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2021This is becoming a delightful series, it is filled with lovely characters, love the plot and the romance. I really enjoy a story about strong woman and men and their con flex . Ms. Brower knows how to really match her characters giving you a highly entertaining listen. I love the sparring between and how they were put at each other at every turn. I love how the lady got her revenge. It was truly a fun listen that had me chuckling from time to time
The narrator did a great job, but as in the last book there is one place he was out of character but it is hardly noticeable. He has a very pleasant voice and gives true emotion to the characters. There are no background noises, no repeating of words, no volume changes. His character voices both male and female are very nice and blend well with the character.
I really enjoyed this book and can't for more in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018I really enjoyed this book, though it was too short to have a real courtship between Helena & Oliver. The story was fun & Lady Helena Carter, daughter of a Duke, was a strong, smart lady & took the initiative to find a solution to support herself as she does not need a man. But things don't go as planned & the handsome, arrogant, single Lord Oliver Hunt, Marquess of Dashville (her brother's best friend), basically ignores her & then insists on dancing & he has always made her heart beat faster. During the next 5 years, Helena finds a way of embarrassing him in the eyes of the Ton & it comes as a revelation to Oliver that he needs to change his actions & the way he treats other people - not the way Helena thought it would affect him. Oliver now sees Helena as a step above all the insipid debutantes & he does need to get married. Well, the chase begins with a trip to Scotland, his Aunt Lady Scarsbury, scandal, Lady X - a fun time to be had in this easy, sweet read. I was gifted this ARC & very glad I could recommend it for all historical romance readers!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2020This is a gem of a story with Lady X up to her usual delicious bits of scandal and outing the Ton in her spreadsheet articles.
But could she get it to work in her favor?
I loved the secret of Lady X's identity being slowly uncovered to Lord Oliver and the power it gave him to woo Lady Helena and at last make her his.
These two characters are a delight. He is staid and set on a given course of action. She is secretive and unloved by her parents, hoping for peace and happiness as a spinster.
Lovely story, well written by Dawn Brower and very nicely narrated by Price Waldman. Listening to it was an enjoyable all round experience which I am happy to recommend.
I listened to the audiobook version and my unbiased review above is given voluntarily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Okay!
Interesting novella that allows a young Lady to attend all the best balls and events so she can write a gossip column - I liked Dash's character after he matured and became human - Helena's character was intelligent but downtrodden by the male dominant society that did exist in that era, we've come a long way, baby - very short but entertaining - could have used some humor
