    CHAPTER 1

MITCH SMILED AS HE walked into the district offices which housed Internal Affairs, Employee Relations, HR and several other offices. Heading to I.A., he nodded at several detectives he knew before spotting the reason he was there. Stopping in front of the desk, he waited until she looked up and met her gaze. Hi.

    Hi.

I don’t know if you remember, but my aunt introduced us at the library’s fundraiser, last week.

    Celia smiled. Yes, Mitchell, right?

Yeah, I was wondering if you’d like to go out for dinner one night. Her eyes were like emerald’s in the sunshine, bright, beautiful and green. She had her hair pulled back today in a loose bun with soft curls hanging on the sides of her round face.

    Oh, well…

Mitch frowned as she turned glancing behind her, toward an office. A man rose to stand, his gaze on them. Sorry, guess I should have asked if you were seeing anyone.

Um, no, that’s not it. I’m not, I guess I just wasn’t prepared for the question.

Mitch smiled. So, is that a yes?

    Well, um…

Mitch, can I talk to you? Nick stated as he walked up.

Mitch glanced over at Nick, brow lifted. Really?

    Yeah. Now.

His gaze narrowed, glancing over with movement, he noticed the man in the office had walked right up to the glass, peering at them. Sure, I’ll be right there.

    Now, Mac Cloud.

Mitch’s head tilted at Nick’s tone. He’d known him for years and had never heard him speak like that, must have something to do with Creepy in the window behind them. Glancing back down at Celia, he smiled and noticed how she looked at Nick nervously. I’m sorry, am I not welcome here?

Oh. Ah, it’s kind of hard to explain. Celia answered.

On how hard it is to find out if you’d like to go on a date? he kept his gaze on her; something was definitely ruffling her feathers. Is it Creepy behind you, who won’t take his eyes off us? Her gaze widened, and Mitch knew he hit it on the head. Listen, I don’t want to get you in any kind of trouble, so, I tell you what, if you’d like to go on a date, text me. Laying his business card on the desk, he slid it across to her, before following Nick to his office.

You should have told me why you were coming. Nick breathed.

And I tell you every time I come down to district, right? Why are you pissy with me? Mitch lifted a brow as he closed the door.

I’m not. Listen, keep an eye on her boss, Thigpen.

His brows creased. Yeah, if that’s the Creeper, stare-all, in the background peering at us from his office, I’ve already caught on. What’s up?

I don’t mean to be an ass, Mitch, but it’s best if you don’t come in to see Celia.

Mitch crossed his arms over his chest and stared at his friend. Explain.

We’re just trying to watch out for her when we can. If you come in, you may make things worse. Thigpen harasses all the women he thinks he may have a shot with. I know for a fact Celia has shot him down several times. She’s a nice lady, but he just won’t back off.

Who’s we and has she reported it?

Everyone on the floor he hasn’t hit on, and yes, several times from what I understand, along with several others. Just a heads-up, man. Watch your six.

Mitch nodded. Will do. Shaking hands, he headed out.

    *

Mitch checked his phone, nothing. Damn, how long did it take to answer yes or no?

    What are you doing? Zack
