Author

Fannie Price

In her childhood, Fannie developed a love of writing and creature features. By the mid-90s, she discovered urban fantasy, and it quickly became her favorite genre to read. After noticing the lack of diversity in the female heroines of the genre she’d grown to adore, Fannie decided to use her writing skills to amplify the voices of Black female protagonists and other underrepresented people in the genre she loves.  She enjoys mixing elements of magic and mystery, with health doses of darkness, and a touch of romance into familiar cities, transforming them into a part of the supernatural realm. Her attention to detail and talent for crafting complex and flawed individuals adds depth and authenticity to her stories.  An avid Witcher and Assassin’s Creed fan girl, when she’s not writing, she spends her free time with family, going to the movies, watching football, and Investigation Discovery. Way too much Investigation Discovery.

    Unabashed - Fannie Price

    I

    Time stopped.

It could have been a scene in a romantic comedy where everything slows down and blends into the background as the camera focuses on the leads kissing with some sort of popular indie song playing. Except it wasn’t a movie, although Auld Lang Syne played, party poppers popped, and confetti fell on us as Beto’s tongue teased my lips apart. I wanted to stop it, or more to the point, it felt like I should stop it, but my wolf enjoyed herself.

When Beto pulled away, a smile tugged at his lips hard enough to reveal the dimple in his right cheek. I didn’t have dimples, but I could tell from the dulled-out colors of my vision that my wolf made her pretense known through a shift in my eyes. It gave me a reason to excuse myself and leave.

    Want some coffee?

    Hmm?

I wrangle my attention from my thoughts to lower the book in my hands, and hum my answer at the woman next to me. Replaying last night's events is going nowhere anyway. At least the book shields my wandering mind from potential questions.

Bella Dacal jerks her head to the right. The Starbucks kiosk near our departure gate in O’Hare airport, now bustles with life.

Walk with me to get coffee.

You know coffee is useless to werewolves.

There’s a chai tea in it for you, my friend tempts with a teasing smile.

I don’t want to move. Across the aisle and two chairs to the right, Jake, Jack, or Jax rests with his head on Will Li’s shoulder. I echo J’s sentiments. Last night’s full moon had me running in the woods with my mother’s pack. The leftover adrenaline from the hunt had me join Bella and her brother, Beto, at a New Year’s Eve party. My impromptu lip-lock with Beto drove me to hang out at a club with my younger sister, Arsinoë, until thirty minutes before the car taking me to the airport was due to arrive at my apartment.

Thank Luna I had the foresight to pack the night before. That and let Arsinoë braid my hair. Fifty percent cornrows. Fifty percent box braids.
