Penalty Box: A Why Choose Hockey Romance (Lux Brumalis Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.8 3.8 out of 5 stars 631 ratings

I loved two things above all others: hockey and Reese.

Becoming Reese’s guardian hadn’t been in my plans, but I couldn’t turn my sibling away when they needed me. I never anticipated how difficult juggling hockey and raising a teenager would be.

Being a woman in a male-dominated sport meant I spent the majority of my time proving I could measure up. It didn’t matter that I’d won two Olympic medals or could outshoot most male players. I was a woman, and that was all that mattered.

When an ex leaked a private video, I was suspended from the league for ‘morality issues.’ Suddenly, I had no clue what to do with my life if it didn’t include hockey. With no direction, purpose, or job prospects, I felt lost, with no clear sign of what to do next.

Visiting a friend, an opportunity for Reese emerged in Utah, and I was thrust into a world I hadn’t known existed—an elite academy for winter sports. Between coaching hockey and training Reese, I met three guys who made my heart race. But after my last relationship disaster, I wasn’t ready to choose a life I wasn’t sure fit me anymore.

Feeling hopeful, I accepted a job coaching the male hockey team. Maybe trying something new would be what Reese and I needed. Lux Brumalis could be what got us out of the Penalty Box once and for all.

Watch out, boys; it was time you learned how to play like a girl.

My name’s Henley Henshaw, but you can call me Coach.

This is a contemporary why-choose hockey romance intended for 18+ due to language and content. This book deals with some dark themes that might be triggering to readers. Please read the foreword for more details. This is book one in a three-book series.

The FMC is a total boss babe and the protective guardian of their teen sibling. This series starts when her career on the ice comes to a crashing halt with a scandal.
Each of these characters are finding their new path in some way. I like that there was a focus on not just the romantic relationships but also the platonic relationships between the guys. We get to see them open up to each other and begin learning how to be vulnerable and form genuine bonds.
The banter between the guys and the siblings is great. The spice was well written. The sense of creeping dread from the underhanded mystery villains had my stomach turning.
This was a great first book in this series. I can’t wait to see if that continues.

Tw: se*ual harra$$ment, bul*ying, transph*bia(transmisia), panic attacks, unlawful distribution of a s*x tape

This book was odd to me. I mean. I liked it well enough. I didn’t realize it was part of a series and it’s like now that I started it I want to continue cuz I’m curious but I also don’t know.
I really liked Henley as a character. She’s strong and a true bada$$. She is great. She’s also a hockey player and a great one and I liked to see that she got down and dirty with the best of them as well. It wasn’t just the boys.
The male leads seemed rushed. Only Dax doesn’t jump right on board and he seemed the most realistic. Although I did understand Fletcher being open to it right away it seemed odd that no one got jealous even once. They also seemed to get over their issues a little too quickly. Only Henley held onto hers really and that seemed the most reasonable. Even she however would get on herself about getting over it. Like she should be able to just snap her fingers and no longer have that trauma. Idk. I did like the idea of all the side characters though. Although having so many poly relationships seemed also unrealistic to me. I could understand them having one around them maybe but having more in such a small area seemed liked reaching.
This book had great representations though and for that I gave it 4 stars.

Tropes: one night stand, ex boyfriends rival, friends to lovers, slow burn, spicy, hockey romance, coworkers, forced proximity, she’s running from her past, lgbtq representation, best friends brother, single parent, protective MMCs, hurt/comfort, she’s his boss

Spice: 🌶️.5

I'd give this book a 3.5. My issue is the fast/medium burn, which I'm usually fine with, but the actions and sayings of the characters just didn't feel believable. It's odd to me that Henley jumps into a massive relationship and trusts so easily after being miserable with Dakota. Everything just felt a tad off. Like it's missing something.

But overall, it's a nice read. I do plan on reading the next book.

Penalty Box, book 1 of Lux Brumalis by Kris Butler @authorkrisbutler - Kris is a new to me author. This book does end on a cliffhanger! Read the trigger warnings!

Even though the book is over 400 pages, it was a quick read that I loved! Onto book 2.

Henley is fired from her hockey league when a sex tape she gave her boyfriend as leaked. Henley is very upset, & Reed, a hockey player, hugs her & gives her advice as she is leaving the arena after being fired. She & her sibling, Reese, who is nonbinary, go to UT to visit, an old girlfriend. She has a one-night stand with Dax, whom she called Blondie. She moves to take a coaching job & meets the brother of an old friend of hers, Fletcher. While there, she runs into Reed again, who is also now coaching at the same school. Henley & Fletcher are having dinner & she tells him that she doesn't know what she wants but rushing into another relationship when she has feelings for 2 other men wouldn't be fair to him. After dinner, Dax comes home & sees Henley there. He wants her & tells her that. They all sit down & talk & decide to work on a poly group with just the 4 of them.

To be continued in book 2!

Just what I said. I couldn’t get too into this book and persisted nonetheless. Not my cup of tea personally. The pacing is weird. The conflict in the beginning doesn’t flow.

This book was written with some real issues but cut short in the end, as not finished!
What happened with game one? What happened with Henley, Reed, Reese and Kurt?
Not happy about the way this book ended!

I’m usually a dark romance reader but I discovered Kris Butler a while back and I’m a huge fan! I love the way her why choose romances develop these beautiful found families. They all lift each other up and compliment each other so well and this book is a perfect example of that. I’m also glad to see some non binary representation with Henley’s sibling as well as the cameos we get from Kris’s past series and how they help these characters navigate polyamory. I’m really enjoying seeing a strong female athlete character as well. A wonderful start to the series!

This book had a lot of intriguing dialogue and important conversations on accepting all persons, which is great! But the rest of the book read like a how to manual on how to start your own RH. Which is fine, it just wasn’t what I was expecting and it seemed like a lot of the drama was overly drawn out.

Hot damn!

Penalty box is a must read for hockey romance lovers

The men are hot, protective and sweet, totally worthy of being your next book boyfriends.
This book had me so engrossed I didn’t stop until I was finished and ready for book 2.

Henley is a strong hockey athlete that has been done wrong by the world of hockey. She shows her strength to prevail throughout this book, growing as a person and learning to become more opening with the men she is falling for.

Each one of the guys need to learn to be more open with each other their relationship with Henley can grow. They are sweet and adorably protective and funny with each of their own yummy qualities.
