Murder Most Annoying: A Cozy Mystery (A Carolyn Neville Mystery Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

A WITTY AND FULL-OF-SUSPENSE COZY MYSTERY.

Carolyn Neville may not be the world’s greatest detective, but that’s fine she doesn’t need to be…yet. She’s living life working as a long-suffering Manhattan book editor—one of those dinosaurs in danger of being replaced by spell check and Netflix.

While Carolyn tries to edit the world around her, the world won’t cooperate. Her spiritual life is shaky and her love life is nonexistent. Unfortunately, her job at a Manhattan publishing house keeps drawing her into more danger—much to her irritation.

Paired with her sarcastic sidekick, Stephen Ames, the two begin to investigate shocking charges that prove one of their bestselling authors, Willow Hayly, is a fraud. When the Atlanta blogger who broke the story is murdered, they find themselves chief among the suspects.

Can Carolyn prove her innocence and pull her life together before she ends up charged with murder?

Perfect for fans of Horace Rumpole, Monk and Stephanie Plum, the Carolyn Neville Mysteries are full of laugh-out-loud cozy mystery suspense.

This book is written in the voice of Carolyn Neville, the main character, and what a voice it is. I love that voice. Smart and funny and snarky. And, I might add, perfectly edited. There’s a great story, wonderful characters and an excellent mystery. I recommend it to everyone who appreciates any of these qualities in a book, and I’m going to buy Murder Most Irritating right. Oh - and my husband loved this book too.

This was an enjoyable story, with a number of amusing passages that, if not quite laugh-out-loud funny, will at least elicit a grin or chuckle from the reader. The plot was unusual, containing enough unexpected twists to keep even a casual reader completely engaged and entertained. All of the characters were three-dimensional, with well-defined motives. The religious theme throughout the story was persistent without becoming actually obnoxious. While I disagree with the author and the characters regarding em dashes and parentheses, which I devoutly adore, I must admit that the book lived up to the characters' editorial careers; it was extremely well-written.

Interesting story with plot twists and an inside look at an editor's duties and responsibilities working for a large
publisher. Add in the world of a super popular author, some romance and suspense and you have a good book.

The wit was the best thing about this mystery. I cackled many times.

The plot itself was not quite believable at several points. And I was an editor at University of Chicago Press (yes, publisher of The Chicago Manual of Style), and we don't abhor sentences beginning with "and" or "however." Editor sleuth Carolyn's attitude toward language isn't consonant with her level of experience or the novel's setting in the recent past.

But it's all in good fun, and I really really needed a fun read. So I'm giving it the four stars for that.

If you suffer from insomnia, don't read this book thinking it will put you to sleep. For that you'll need something more soporific such as a book of marriage or parenting advice. Instead, this book will make you laugh out loud, and if you're unlucky enough to have to wear a CPAP mask, you will sound like a serial killer doing his (or increasingly her) dirty deeds. Just sayin'. After John's many years of experience in publishing, this is a fun sendup of the industry cleverly disguised as a murder mystery. Sadly, it's doubtful he has any friends whatsoever in Legal or Marketing since he implies that those aren't even real careers. But he has many fans in Editorial, and that's what counts. Buy this book. You won't be sorry.

The thing I appreciated most about the book is how human the characters are. You can see yourself in their shows. It was also fun seeing the comments about the publishing industry, the self-help gurus, and those who keep them running. Add a murder and job stresses and you have a winner of a story. If you want a good quick read, Carolyn's story is for you.
