About this ebook

A naughty employee is an employee who does not give a hundred percent to his or her employer. This employee wastes time, does personal work on company time, or literally steals money, stock, or stationery from the employer.

Everyone is guilty of procrastinating from time to time, but for the naughty employee, procrastination is an art. The incoming and pending trays will overflow while the out-tray sits empty. Deadlines? They sail straight by. The joker is popular in the office not because of his hard work, but because he is an entertainer. The naughty employee's desk calendar is full of scribbles and zeroes. The troublemaker can often be seen wandering from desk to desk, gossiping about co-workers and engaging in casual chitchat. If he's not being a social butterfly, this employee hides from management, closing the door or drawing the blinds.

Research has shown that perpetual tardiness shows less respect and consideration for those waiting and for the employer. In The Naughty Employee, author Moses Mumba helps you spot and pick apart this behaviour, so you can recognise the signs and lay down the necessary boundaries for the naughty employee in your work life.

    Preface

The Nnaughty Employee is meant for employees and employers alike. It is designed as a general read, meant to lighten the mood of the readers but also brings to the fore many challenges experienced every day in a workplace in the marriage relationship of employer and employee.

This book has very few references because it is mostly based on my observations and experience.

I would like to thank all authors referenced at the end of the book. Particularly I would like to thank the following authors for inspiring me to write this book:

    - CHAPTER ONE -

    The Naughty Employee

A naughty employee is an employee who does not give a hundred percent to his or her employer. An employee who wastes time, does personal work on company time or literally steals money, stock, or stationery from the employer. Such is a very, very, very bad girl or boy. A naughty employee don’t you agree?

On DSTV there was a lady who used to advertise DSTV Now and her exact words were, "Do you know you can watch your favourite series and movies on the go using DSTV Now? Download the app and you can watch whenever, wherever. I use the office Wi-Fi to stream and it is such a vibe or you can download the content now and watch later in peace."

Are such adverts encouraging employees to be naughty or are such adverts just highlighting the common practices already existing among some employees?

The naughty employee is one who knows what to do, how, when and why but consciously decides not to do it, or does it only partially or half-heartedly. However, an employee used in a position they are not qualified for and where no further training is given by the employer is not naughty if he makes genuine mistakes. The employer would be the naughty one.

Why are there so many naughty employees, how do they become naughty and how can we for sure know they are naughty employees? Most importantly, how can employers deal with the problem? Are naughty employees born or created, what do you say?

Everybody wants a job and wants to keep it. How then can some employees be so naughty and risk losing their jobs? Why are some employees naughty? Are naughty employees born or turned naughty by circumstances? You have many questions to think about, and I am sure you equally have many answers to these questions.

    Humble beginnings

After a good young man or lady finishes school, the next thing is to look for the means of sustenance, a job. The world is a very expensive place and competitive. Looking after oneself needs money and it should be sizeable and should flow constantly for the rest of one’s life. It should not trickle; it needs to flow weekly or monthly. At this point, this young person is nice and presumed honest. After all, he has never been an employee before and hence has no previous naughty record. If he had worked before, the naughty side of his life is silent and deeply concealed.

When you are not working, a R100 may seem more valuable than to someone earning a salary. Yes, a person in need will be nice, humble, ready and a willing servant to many. This man needs a job or some form of work to look after himself unless he is a Rockefeller progeny.

When looking for employees, recruiters screen job hunters for bad eggs, but do they succeed? If they do, why are there so many naughty employees? If no employer needs a naughty employee, how then do they employ naughty individuals? Are naughty employees hired or created by the environment and the horrible bosses they work for?

Some may say yes, they are hired and yet others no and as usual others sit on the fence. What do you think?

    Job hunting

A human being is an adaptive species by nature, adjusting to circumstances for his own selfish good or most importantly to survive. Let us look at a person in need of a job. He will firstly adapt the curriculum vitae to the job on the table. He carefully chooses only the positive experiences and developments in his life, probably with a degree of exaggeration, ignoring all the bad and naughty actions. He emphasises church, hard work and honest charitable work. He even starts to convince himself of the inflated ‘truths’ as he relates these positives over and over again at interviews.

Why is it called JOB HUNTING? Because we literally hunt the jobs. Some job hunters use all the tactics in and out of the books to get those jobs. In the animal hunting business, there are two types of hunters. The first one thinks only about benefits of the catch such as profit, but also thinks of the law or morals and the animal’s well-being. He wants to be selective and use the right trap that can catch only the animal he wants, perhaps without subjecting the animal to too much suffering, and preserve the environment. He is aware of the laws regarding the traps and certain laws that protect animals. Moreover, he does not want to be seen as cruel even in the eyes of the law.

The second is subtle and cunning. He will set traps irrespective of whether this is prohibited by the laws of the land. His concern is filling his pocket or stomach. Anything else is of no consequence.

Job hunters are the same. A few falsify their CVs, concocting qualifications and experiences and putting in conniving references. Even if they know too well that they can’t perform. They will take up the job hoping to learn before they can get fired. One man reasoned that as a senior member of a multimillion-dollar corporation he would earn more money by the time he got fired.

Which of the two hunters would you prefer? Have you had an experience with both types of hunters? If so, what
