CALUM’S DESCENT
a sci-fi horror short
A lone man stood inside an empty room with a pistol in one hand and a cross in the other. The pistol dangled at his side and trembled in a fearful grip. It was a military-grade plasma weapon with exceptional stopping power. The cross was pressed to his chest. It was made of two wooden dowels, bound together with strips of fabric ripped from his prison cot.
But a prisoner he was no more.
The man lingered around a large black panel on the floor. He stared at it with an intense trepidation, pleading for courage, yearning for the strength to proceed. The room was round, eerily silent, and filled with sterile light. There were no ports or windows, only a single door that vanished into the smooth walls. The towering interior trapped the man like a bug in a jar.
Seamless white panels surrounded him from floor to ceiling. The black panel in the center dominated the space, serving as a menacing outlier. It was a few meters wide with a glowing red perimeter. The man drew a deep breath, then exhaled a potent mixture of fear and faith.
