The restaurant sat in the middle of downtown like a diamond in its setting – shining, beautiful and way out­side my price range. But Lily picked the place and I really couldn’t decline her invitation. Have you ever tried saying no to Lilith Quinn? I dare you.

The name of the restaurant was something long and French that I couldn’t pronounce. A young woman in a fitted black vest opened the door at my approach.

Uh, thanks, I said.

The woman smiled and closed the door behind me before too much of the February cold could get through. Inside, dinner was in full swing and well-dressed couples sat at every table. There was nothing metaphorical about the diamonds sparkling at their throats and ears. I saw cufflinks that cost more than I made in a year. Back when I had a job at all.

I felt more out of place in that restaurant than I ever had as the only guy in my high school home economics class. In my tailored suit, I almost would have blended in… but my jacket was still balled up in the passenger seat of my truck and my shirt sleeves were still rolled up to my elbows. I didn’t dare pull them down, either, and not just because I didn’t even own a pair of cufflinks.

Behind something that looked suspiciously like a polished ma­hogany podium, the host – or in a restaurant like this, I suppose he was a maître d’ – inspected me with a raised eyebrow.

Uh, hi, I said. I’m here to meet Lilith Quinn.

His eyebrow jumped up a little higher, but he just inclined his head and escorted me back to a small white-draped table beneath a tall, narrow window. I’m sure the view outside was great, but my eyes didn’t make it that far.

Lily was already seated at the table, of course, and she looked gor­geous. She wore a long, clinging black dress with no sleeves and a matching black silk choker around her neck. Her red hair cas­caded over one shoulder like something on fire.

Sorry I’m late, Lil, I said. You look amazing.
