    What is Practice?

    Since the late 90s, I’ve taught hundreds of guitar students, and most of them (including myself) have complained about the same problems:

    1. I don’t have time to practice

    2. I don’t know what to practice

    3. I don’t feel inspired to practice

    These same three problems come up time and again, so chances are, at some point, you’ve caught yourself saying these same things.

    On top of that, most students don’t really understand what it means to practice. For many people, we think of practice as the repetition of the same sort of thing over and over again in an attempt to improve a skill. However, practice is much more complicated than that. Repetition can only get you so far. You have to be engaged with it. You have to have goals, a reason for practicing. Otherwise you end up just going through the motions, resulting in little to no measurable results. This will inevitably lead to frustration, boredom, and eventually a loss of interest in something that you once loved doing so much.
